Publisher's Summary

Gene Wolfe's Return to the Whorl is the third volume, after On Blue's Waters and In Green's Jungles, of his ambitious SF trilogy The Book of the Short Sun.

It is again narrated by Horn, who has embarked on a quest in search of the heroic leader Patera Silk. Horn has traveled from his home on the planet Blue, reached the mysterious planet Green, and visited the great starship, the Whorl, and even, somehow, the distant planet Urth. But Horn's identity has become ambiguous, a complex question embedded in the story, whose telling is itself complex, shifting from place to place, present to past. Perhaps Horn and Silk are now one being.

Return to the Whorl brings Wolfe's major new fiction, The Book of the Short Sun, to a strange and seductive climax.

Excellent with one flaw

The performer Jason Culp is excellent and I highly recommend this book and obviously, the first two volumes of the series with one caveat.

The one unfortunate problem is that the very ending of the story containing the final resolution of the plot is missing. If you buy this audio book you will need the full text with you, from either the hardcover, paperback or e-book.

I can only assume that Audible Studios was working from the text of the e-book version which was not laid out properly. The correct layout is found in the original hardcover and paperback versions as follows.

Jahlee's letter
Chapters 1- 20
Afterword

The Afterword might appear at first glance to contain dry and uninteresting comments from the author Gene Wolfe. It actually comprises several pages of action and dialogue involving four of the main characters and resolves the whole plot of the seven book sequence – Book of the Long Sun & Book of the Short Sun.

The e-book version relegated the Afterword to the very end of the text, even after publishers blurb where it might easily have been missed altogether by many first-time readers.

Sadly the audiobook version omits it all together!
