About this listen

Mike Monroe and Jane Baxter barely survived their terrifying journey to the center of the Earth. But a burning curiosity still tormented them about the origins of the pale creatures in the stygian darkness of the caves, and why were their dreams also haunted by something huge and monstrous that seemed as old as time itself?

Now, news of a Russian military expedition has forced their hands, and also meant they must go back to a place they swore they’d never return. But this time they’re going with a team of highly skilled mercenaries and scientists to help them track the Russians and also help unlock the secrets hidden at the center of the planet.

But what they find is something that evolution created in an environment vastly different to that of the benign world of the surface. And something that waits eagerly for their return.

Less enjoyable

Did not enjoy the 2nd book as much as the 1st book. Just some more of the experiences of the 1st book.

Unnecessary

On the whole, the book was ok. Nothing groundbreaking and fairly predictable. Sean Mangan seems to struggle as a narrator now and I personally find it hard to keep focus.

The main reason for the 1 star is that foul, vile and vulgar epilogue that was completely unnecessary.
That alone is enough to put me off reading anything else Greig Beck has to offer.

Most of the stars are for Sean Mangan.

Most of the stars are for Sean Mangan. I admire authors cheeky enough to keep writing the same story, like Edgar Rice Burroughs and P. G. Wodehouse, but it only works with good writing and engaging characters. I look forward to reading Beck's books and til now have pre-ordered them, but the last few have been disappointing. Mike and Jane are as dull as a couple of boiled eggs, surrounded by cardboard cut-outs, and the dialogue is generally tedious. There is one obnoxious character, but there's way too much of him, which made reading annoying, like being stuck on a very long trip with someone you can't get away from. There were no other characters to balance him out or to take an interest in. I struggled to finish this one.

you killed the wrong people.

narrator had a good voice, easy to listen to but was very flat for all the exciting scenes. made them a lot more dull then they could be.

Spoiler:

Harris and Ally were the best characters. and what the author did to Ally was incredibly messed up. If he hadn't killed those two I would have enjoyed the book a lot more.

Lacking in many ways

not as good as the first, lacking mystery and depth. a repeatable recipe that gets old quick.

Twists, turns and a little bit of horror

This second book in the franchise was much better than the first. While much of the story was a bit of a repeat, there were some new twists and turns. There are a few parts where the author seems to have just remembered to include things, a camera for example and I found that a bit frustrating. Pretty good character development.

the story was pretty good, the character development and the ending were not so good, Ally deserved better
