About this listen

In this book, Mustafa Akyol, senior fellow at the Cato Institute and opinion writer for The New York Times, both diagnoses “the crisis of Islam” in the modern world and offers a way forward. Diving deep into Islamic theology, and also sharing lessons from his own life story, he reveals how Muslims lost the universalism that made them a great civilization in their earlier centuries. He especially demonstrates how values often associated with Western Enlightenment - freedom, reason, tolerance, and an appreciation of science - had Islamic counterparts, which sadly were cast aside in favor of more dogmatic views, often for political ends.

Elucidating complex ideas with engaging prose and storytelling, Reopening Muslim Minds borrows lost visions from medieval Muslim thinkers, such as Ibn Rushd (aka Averroes), to offer a new Muslim worldview on a range of sensitive issues, including human rights, equality for women, and freedom of religion, or freedom from religion. While frankly acknowledging the problems in the world of Islam today, Akyol offers a clear and hopeful vision for its future.

A wonderfully concise argument for Islam as it could be.

Masha Allah, this book is truly a tour de force. Arguing with great prescience for a fresh look at particularly Sunni Islam. Seeking through reference to the Quran, the Sunnah and history to propose a return to the classical islam of tolerance, plurality and an individual focus.

A must read for every Muslim

An absolute masterpiece that every Muslim must read. I hope this gets translated into all languages that Muslims around the world speak. Mostafa addresses fundamental aspects of Islamic thought that are holding back Muslims and Muslim majority countries from contributing to our world and improving their own lives as well as the lives of humanity. He has clarified important aspects of Islam that I have personally been troubled with in a way that has strengthened my faith and love for God and the Quran more than ever before. My evolution is Islamic thought has led me to every corner of its practice (including extremist versions) and I feel like I have returned to the true essence and teachings of the religion.
