"Rene linjer" er en fortsættelse af romanerne "Visse hensyn" og "Faste forhold" om fem søskende og deres kærlighedsliv.

De to forrige bind handlede om hvordan de fem søskende opdagede kærligheden i de stilfærdige 50ere og hvordan de ti år senere prøvede at holde på kærligheden, forny den eller genfinde den.

"Rene linjer" begynder et par måneder efter at Faste forhold slutter, i december 1968. Maj bliver gift med Sixten, og der festes i hendes barndomshjem. Romanen spænder så over et halvt år, og i løbet af den tid sker der afgørende ændringer i nogle af de parforhold som serien har fulgt, både hos den ældre generation og hos den yngre. Nogle af personerne bliver alene. Andre prøver at fortsætte i nye forbindelser, hvor kravet om "rene linjer“ måske er lettere at leve op til.
