Publisher's Summary
Emi is the kamigakari. In a few short months, her life as a mortal will end, and her new existence as the human host of a goddess will begin. Carefully hidden from those who would destroy her, she has prepared her mind, body, and soul to unite with the goddess - and not once has she doubted her chosen fate.
Shiro is a yokai, a spirit of the earth, an enemy of the goddess Emi will soon host. Mystery shrouds his every move, and his ruby eyes shine with cunning she can't match and dares not trust. But she saved his life, and until his debt is paid, he is hers to command - whether she wants him or not. On the day they meet, everything Emi believes comes undone, swept away like snow upon the winter wind. For the first time, she wants to change her fate - but how can she erase a destiny already wrought in stone? Against the power of the gods, Shiro is her only hope...and hope is all she has left.

Was heading toward 5 star, but went to 3 star.
Would have given it five stars, but the author lost me with abrupt insta-love. I was happily enjoying the ship, and didn't mind either, but the author managed to destroy both in quick succession for me. I only kept listening for the world and the cool concepts of Kami and Yokai this book plays around with. Don't have the drive to read more, though. The twists are a tad too heavy-handed for my liking and I don't feel like I need to read it to know what happens.

Super exciting world & adventure
An intriguing world of gods and demons, good and evil, and how so much can be misconstrued with errors of misguided intent. A facinating, albeit at times frustrating, adventure of an innocent girl in a world that has been vastly tainted by the stories and lies that have been perpetuated throughout her life. Emi's discoveries of the inconsistencies she has been taught with her expanding experiences are relatable to anyone that has discovered that some aspect of their own upbringing/religion/society didn't live up to the ideals that had been expected. The story definitely sucked me in with all of the characters and their various temperaments and schenanigans. Definitely on my favourites list along with the rest of the adventure in Dark Tempest & Immortal Fire!

A bit average
An average tale. There was potential there in the rich japanese cultural setting. But the main character lacks interest and strength. The tale is somewhat cheesy and stereotypical. The sweet shy girl needing to be rescued by powerful men. Not as good as Annette Marie's Guild Codex series.

An enthralling adventure
So refreshing to listen to a fantasy set in Japan! The start takes a little bit to get you in but once you get caught there's no turning back. I'm familiar with some of the mythology in this story and maybe because of that it was a little bit predictable for me, but not in an unpleasant way. That being said, I recommend this to those familiar and unfamiliar with this theme, as it still takes you on a well paced ride into the mythological forests of Japan. The only hard point for me was keeping up with all the names of the different beings; if you don't speak Japanese or something similar, you might find they all start to sound the same after a while. Great characters, great story, great writing style and a terrific narrator; what more could you want?

I usually love this author, but not this series
I have tried on multiple occasions to get into this book and each time, got bored to tears. I have finally given up. Even the narrator is nowhere up to her usual standards.
My recommendation is to read anything else by Annette Marie, or at least download a free sample to see if it tickles your interest.
