About this listen
The long-awaited sequel to Jasper Fforde's cult bestseller Shades of Grey, set in world where social hierarchy revolves entirely around visual colour.
Imagine a world where your position in society depended on what bit of the colour spectrum you could see. This is the world inhabited by Eddie Russett (red, middle-level) and Jane Grey (monochromatic, lowest in society). Eddie and Jane must negotiate the delicate Chromatic politics of society to find out what the 'Something that Happened' actually was, how society got to be this way, and crucially, is there Somewhere Else beyond their borders - and if there is, could there be Someone Else, too, someone whose unseen hand has been guiding the fortunes and misfortunes of the nation for the past 500 years?
It's a tale of a young couple's thirst for justice and answers in an implacably rigid society, where the prisoners are also the guards, and cages of convention bind the citizens to only one way of thinking - or suffer the consequences....

Bring on book 3
Such a lovely sequel and even though it took more than 10 years to happen, it was well worth the wait. I'm looking forward to the conclusion of the story in book 3!

Not quite the same vibe
Narrator - I much prefer the previous guy. This narrator mispronounces basic words (like proven!) and pronounces the colour names differently than book 1, which is often jarring. The characterisation of the characters is also very different, both in sound, accent and mood, which i disliked a lot, particularly Tommo, Jane and others.
Book - you can tell there is a big gap between writing as there are many details missing in this book that were mentioned in book one, which in book time was only a week ago. The main characters seem very out of character and make different choices, and speak with a different tone of voice than in book 1 also, especially Eddie, Jane and Eddie’s dad. In saying that, I did like the ending, though looking back the narrative is very windy - many different directions that don’t always make sense, and don’t make a lot of sense in hindsight either.
I am still glad to finally have a sequel, but wish there was more connection to book 1.

Definitely worth the wait
I recommend re reading shades of grey before reading the sequel. Loved this book just as much as the first one. Great reading too and nice to hear the author’s voice.

Very enjoyable. Can't wait for the next book.
Really enjoyed this book. Like with the first one, it took me awhile to adjust to the dry and quirky writing style, but once I did it was very engaging. The end had my eyes pricking with happy tears. Can't wait to see what happens next. Oh Brave New World.

the humour
the voice inflections of each character painted a vivid image. The relationships drew me in. Fforde is a master craftsman!

Sequel worth the wait. Please don’t wait another decade Jasper
Continues shades intriguing narrative, and builds out the world brilliantly. The character development is wonderful and had to stop myself binging the book in a matter of days. An escapists dream.

The perfect sequel
Absolutely loved it. At its heart, a comedy but told with heart and compassion. Gutted that I can't spend time with Eddie and Jane anymore. Preferred the original narrator but Harper did OK - loved having Fforde narrating the historical notes.

Excellent narrator, and some of my favourite characters
I’d just finished reading the book and wasn’t ready to say goodbye to the series, so I decided to listen to it as well. The narrator is excellent! So much better than the narrator for Shades of Grey. He’s got a much younger voice which matches the age of the character, doesn’t do anything weird with accents, and does good female voices.
The plot… well I wouldn’t change it because it’s beautiful, even if the ending is rather sudden, but I wish there was a way to stay in this world a little longer. I wish this wasn’t the end. There are some discrepancies between the Shades of Grey and Red Side Story but it’s understandable given the 15 year gap. The world is still immersive and witty and enjoyable.

So good!
Another book from Jasper Fforde that I truly enjoyed. This one follows Shade of Greys and manages not to be repetitive. It is not simply another adventured with the chromatics but a true development of the argument. The performance is good although Some can regret the change of cast with respect to the first book. Other than that, a very enjoyable book!
