About this listen

From the New York Times best-selling author of the Gray Man series comes a startlingly realistic novel of World War III.

A desperate Kremlin takes advantage of a military crisis in Asia to simultaneously strike into Western Europe and invade east Africa in a bid to occupy three rare Earth mineral mines that will give Russia unprecedented control over the world's hi-tech sector for generations to come.

Pitted against the Russians are a Marine lieutenant colonel pulled out of a cushy Pentagon job, a French Special Forces captain and his intelligence operative father, a young Polish partisan fighter, an A-10 Warthog pilot, and the commander of an American tank platoon who, along with his German counterpart, fight from behind enemy lines.

Through grand land, sea, and air battles to a small unit fighting hand-to-hand in the jungle, Russia and the US face off in a terrifying but thrilling battle for world dominance - with constant the threat of a Russian nuclear detonation ever present.

Enjoyed the book throughout. Good characters, believable storyline, crafted well. It’s a page turner that I wanted to continue reading beyond the end of the book.

Well written and captivating

I was bewildered that in the Kenyan chapters there was no mention, no mention at all, of the local people or reaction of the Kenyan government to two superpower armies traipsing through and bombing their countryside.

I imagine the writers have a coloniser’s entitled mindset which makes the local indigenous people invisible! I guess the local people might have hidden from the American, French and Russian military but they couldn’t hide their villages which would have been trampled in the armies’ march and battles. This contrasts with the Polish locals for whom the impact of the conflict was detailed and acknowledged. Because they are white?

For me this element severely detracted from the story and I won’t bother with any more by these authors.

Good character definition and descriptions of the battles and politics. Good narration.
