Publisher's Summary

A quiet summer night...a neat suburban house...and another innocent, happy family is shattered - the latest victims of a grisly series of hideous sacrificial killings that no one understands, and no one can stop. Nobody lives to tell of the unimaginable carnage. Only the blood-stained walls bear witness.

All hope rests on Special Agent Will Graham, who must peer inside the killer's tortured soul to understand his rage, to anticipate and prevent his next vicious crime. Desperate for help, Graham finds himself locked in a deadly alliance with the brilliant Dr. Hannibal Lecter, the infamous mass murderer who Graham put in prison years ago.

As the imprisoned Lecter tightens the reins of revenge, Graham's feverish pursuit of the Red Dragon draws him inside the warped mind of a psychopath, into an unforgettable world of demonic ritual and violence, beyond the limits of human terror.

A native of Mississippi, Thomas Harris began his writing career covering crime in the United States and Mexico, and was a reporter and editor for the Associated Press in New York City. His first novel, Black Sunday, was published in 1975; followed by Red Dragon, in 1981; The Silence of the Lambs, in 1988; Hannibal, in 1999; and Hannibal Rising, in 2006. All the Hannibal Lecter books have been made into films, most notably starring Anthony Hopkins and Jodie Foster. Sky has also produced a television series based on the notorious mass murderer, starring Mads Mikkelsen, Laurence Fishburne, and Hugh Dancy.

Solid book, needed different voices.

While the actual reading was very clear and had a great tone to it, it would have been better if he tried to differentiate the characters with difference voices more. Some sections were a little confusing as to which character was saying what, as there aren't the 'said Will' bits after a lot of the dialogue.

Otherwise great book.

Classic

The story took a while to get going, but I loved the characters and plot development. The narrator was excellent, with different "voices" for different characters.

That was so sweet man...

I have watched the movies and this is the first book, I really enjoyed it . maybe I'm just morbid but I was hoping the tooth fairy AKA The red dragon would get one more family and we would be there... the narrator was quite monotonous his voice was really good but his range in accents and voices was limited, still did not detract from the story.

Wonderfully delivered

As a fan of the movie, the book is pure gold! From the delivery to the story itself, the novel keeps you engaged in the twisted mind of the villain and the investigative pursuit against a clock of potential victims

Great Story, Poor Narration

While the story is extremely well done, unfortunately the narrator didn’t put much into the emotion; it sounded plaintive, bland or whiny, rather than giving each character a built structure in voice-set.

I hope in future this narrator will take some classes in emotive narration.

slow start but great finish

took a little bit to get used to the voice performer, and the book itself is also a bit slow at the start, but is a great story overall

Red

Not as good as lambs but interesting and good enough for a read. I think it mostly setup for lambs and Hannibal.

they don't get much better than this...

the original and best... harris knocks it out of the park with a masterpiece of suspense... great prose style... amazing narrative... original characters... still just as chilling forty years later... in fact most of the new ones still don't even touch it... this one's a total cracker... it blew this fussy listener's finicky little mind... so yes... highly recommend it!
