A well crafted tale

Enjoyed these Mick Herron books very much. I think it is fair to say that the author reached a wonderful, and humorous zenith with the Slow Horses and I am looking forward to more. But these earlier works have much to recommend them.

Disappointing

Not the Herron I have come to love; slow and repetitive, The performance does it no favours but i don't think it is entirely to blame.

Solid

Takes its time but actually builds nicely to a wonderful climax. A didn’t book but still the same Herron style. Ending leaves the reader in the seat of deciding what happens. I’d have liked a bit more certainty there

Slow Horses Not but still good

The narrator does male voices in a style I find annoying and distracting. Put aside the string of plot elements that are not believable and it’s a pleasant yarn. Lacks the punchy dialogue of Slough Horses and also somewhat predictable plot twists.

Great plot - plenty to keep you guessing!

A really enjoyable read - lovely Mick Herron plot that links into the Slough House narrative but has plenty all on its own. Very well read too.

Very Disappointing

Very slow, and the most overwrought reading performance I have ever heard . She is a shocker and absolutely ruined a semi - ok book. I couldnt finish because of her.

Disappointing for fans of Herron’s Slough House series

I’m an avid fan of the excellent Slough House series and while waiting for the next volume to be released thought I’d try these other titles. This book was a disappointment. It’s very slow, particularly at the beginning - it’s repetitive and the narrator is nothing like the excellent standard of the series. The story isn’t that strong, the characters don’t have the same interest, and overall it’s a much poorer quality. If this was my first book from this author I wouldn’t have gone on to read the series - which would have been a great loss. Skip this - stick with the Slough House/Slow Horses series.

Not in the same league as the Slow Horses series

Very disappointed sadly by this book - at first I thought I was just missing the usual narrator but this was sluggish and though it had moments where it looked like it was taking off it never really did. Not sure if it might have been better to read than listen to but the writing didn’t come across as strong as his usual work.
