About this listen

Number one Sunday Times Bestseller

Best-selling author Tom Bower reveals the making of a monarch – King Charles III

King Charles faces many challenges as he succeeds his mother to the throne. Despite his hard work and genuine concern for the disadvantaged, King Charles III has struggled in the past to overcome his unpopularity. After Diana’s death, his approval rating crashed to 4% and has been only rescued by his marriage to Camilla.

In unearthing many secrets and dramas surrounding King Charles, Bower’s book, relies on the testimony from over 120 people employed or welcomed into the inner sanctum. The result is a book which uniquely probes the character and court of Charles that no one, until now, has seen. It offers an unrivalled and intimate look at King Charles, his many years as heir and how a monarch was made.

Interesting read in 2022… goes someway to explain H & Ms Flee to the US

They say the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree
Privilege, status, self indulgent lifestyle, lack of transparency, secrecy & millionaire backing for individual causes isn’t discriminatory. Even if only a percentage true, goes a long way to explain family relations, sibling relations, political aspirations & power. Do as I say not as I do. How relevant as situations play out globally online Xmas 2022 across the Atlantic. I’m reminded of the shows Upstairs Downstairs & Yes Minister. Lawsuits, lies, coverups, creative accounting, headlines. Scandalous. Unsurprising. Service? Self Service. Lives of the rich and famous.
Detailed, informative.

Phenomenal detail

I’m really glad I listened to this book which I did after a similarly positive experience listening to Tom Bower’s book on Meghan and Harry. I’m rather horrified that we have the king we have. Quite frankly, he seems like a horrendous man for the role; completely hypocritical, rather stupid, spoiled, self focussed and certainly out of touch with the common person. Great book though even though I’ve come out the other end as an anti-monarchist.

Fascinating insight into King Charles

The book was as exciting as any political thriller and I couldn’t put it down. The machinations of the Prince and his courtiers was quite eye opening. I particularly enjoyed all the gossip and scandals. It gave me a fascinating insight into the character of Charles and his threat to the stability of the monarchy. Tom Bower has written an insightful account of both events and Charles’ role in and reaction to them. It was read at a good pace but I sometimes found the narrator a little too cynical in his tone which influenced the narrative rather than leaving me to determine how to interpret matters. Overall though a great read. All I can hope is that the Queen lives to 105.

An astonishing story

I found the book quite long because I'm not familiar with many of the names.
It was well read however and interesting.
To the average person it is unbelievable how conceited and arrogant Charles is.
Even if 20% is true, I would resent having him as king. I hope Australia removes the Union Jack from our flag after Queen Elizabeth.

This is not for fans of Charles.

Personally, I’m on the fence about Prince Charles. I think, like most of us, he’s neither all good or all bad. However, this book skews to focusing on his negative characteristics. I’m fascinated by the British Royal family and therefore thought I had read everything there was to know about them. But there were stories and insights in this book that I had never heard before. The narrator has a nice even tone but I had to slow it down slightly.

Interesting.

A lot of detail, some of which became a bit boringly repetitive. Came away not liking Charles much.

What a load of boring rubbish

I can't believe I fell for the marketing pitch & purchased this book. Terrible, bland, boring. Why, why, why would an editor allow this to be published.
A waste of money & time.

Very negative

A very negative piece of work. Author seems to have a bone to pick with the subject.
