About this listen
I died for Hostess cupcakes.
I know. Tragic, right? Even worse, after I came back, I still didn't get any cupcakes.
What I did get, however, is a six-foot-something reaper with eyes like blue fire to guide me into the world of the supernatural. Which, as it turned out, wasn't quite like the fairy tales little girls are told growing up.
Not only is magic real, more importantly, so are monsters. And apparently, I'm one of them.
But I'm getting ahead of myself here. You see, four years ago, I left my hometown and swore to never come back.
Now, my brother is dead, and I have no choice but to go searching for answers. Except finding them isn't easy when the secret society he belonged to is covering it up. I have to find out who killed him while watching my own back, because if I'm not careful, I might be next - and this time, there's no do-over. Luckily for me, Mr. Single and Hot as F--k is determined to help me keep my ass alive.
I'm a lucky, lucky girl. Some days.
Contains mature themes.

Nice use of the Grimm mythology.
lots of nice references to popular supernatural shows. The story could be inspired by Supernatural and has elements of another popular show Grimm. The short hand is taking the place of real world building. The narrative moves at a good pace and features fun banter between the two lead characters.

Not for me
My review mirrors the another review left. I found that Salems character lacked depth. And the relationship with Graves did not have a strong connection. I found salems character was unintelligent and didn’t show any emotion towards her brothers depth. It’s gear to just shrug off everything, but she just seemed kind of ditsi. I quite liked Graves’s character but felt sorry that he had to deal with Salem.
The narrator has a very unique voice. Not completely annoying but it doesn’t create an emotional connection. I feel like if the book was read by a different narrator, I may have connected with the character more
I was glad it was a relatively short book that was in the free catalogue and I won’t be reading the next book

2.5 stars
I liked the idea & were some good parts but just felt it didn't have enough meat in it to really grab me. I just wish got more emotion from Salem that wasn't snark or need for cupcakes. She returns home after her twin brothers death. She didn't attend the funeral & only had one small moment where she showed any emotion regarding his death & she dies & comes back as a reaper & suddenly in this supernatural world & shes all 'ah well shrug move on'. Because of this never really got a feel for her other than all she wants is cupcakes. The character of Grim lived up to his name & not much likeable about him. Her best friend of Tasmin seemed to be the only friendly one in this book.... . will not be continuing with this series.
Holly Jackson is ok, but her voice is so distinct all books she narrates sound the same no matter who has written them, that I actually thought I was listening to another book from a different author a few times.

whiney
FMC is whiney loudmouth, which I guess some people enjoy but isn't for me. The narrator made it extra grating, sorry. Got halfway through and still didn't care about any of it so did not finish.
