About this listen

Current child-rearing techniques seek to develop children who are confident, self-assured, and unafraid to speak their minds-lions instead of lambs. Although largely positive, this shift has brought with it some very serious problems in our children's behavior. Without going back to an authoritarian model, Joe Newman has developed new ways of helping children develop the ability to self-regulate without undermining their confidence, and individuality.

“One of the best books on child-rearing. Joe Newman describes a cultural shift that has reinforced anxiety and behavior disorders in children by negating parental authority. Even more important, he provides specific, non-punitive ways for parents to help their kids by taking back their authority. Filled with examples and experiences from the author’s own life as a child with A.D.H.D., the book is a treasure-trove of useful information.” (Barry Michels, psychotherapist and New York Times bestselling author of The Tools)

“This book is packed with useful information. It is an insightful and practical guide for managing children. I would recommend it to any parent.” (L. Alan Sroufe, Professor Emeritus Ph.D. University of Minnesota)

Raising Lions challenges us to re-examine our interactions and relationships with children, re-think the root causes of behavior problems, and find new ways to support healthy, happy development.

For over 20 years Joe Newman has worked with children, parents, teachers, and administrators to help them understand and improve child behavior.

Best advice and clear directs there is.

I could go on about this book in so many ways.
How I identified myself as a child in his examples and how I would have benefited from this kid of action instead of being suppressed or largely left to my own devices.
How my little lion has always been testing his power and all the ways the other method over used where ineffective.
And how all how this worked for all three of my children who have very different personalities 11 (lion) 9 (lamb) 1.5 (lion cub) haha even on him!
But best of yet it so eloquently articulated all the things I had always believed and tried to do and couldn't convey to my husband who was inadvertently making things worse and landing us on totally different pages from where we started.
A short audiobook listened together in a car ride and our house is 100% more harmonious and can get on with enjoyment and gratitude for the hard work we all put into our children while letting them be who they are.
Thanks endlessly Joe not just for me but all the kids out there who don't have to be in anguish.

Techniques that work

This audible really made me not want to stop listening. An eye opener listen, to the different phases of a child’s development and great techniques I’ve now implemented into my own parenting. I especially liked how he gave detailed scenarios, as well as the importance of the type of words to use when dealing with children and their behaviour. Thanks Joe Newman.

Old school discipline

Sadly this book pushes a very archaic parenting style. It’s all about ‘time out’ and the will of the adult forcing itself over the will of the child. Very old school. Having said that I did find a few gems and in here.
