Ragnhilds fortællinger om den fædrene gård på Island har spundet længslens tråd i barnebarnet Frejlifs sind. Da Ragnhild dør, er der ingen til at holde hånden over ham, og ingen til at holde de gamle guder i hævd. Nye skikke har indfundet sig i bygden, og Frejlifs familie har vendt sig til Hvidekrist. Et gammelt nag i familien blusser op og sender Frejlif bort fra bygden. Sammen med en frigiven trælkvinde finder han i skovene et efterladt spædbarn, en pige. Udsatte børn skal man lade ligge, sådan foreskrives det, men de tager hende til sig. Nu kan de ikke vende tilbage til bygden.
