About this listen

Rachel Walsh is 27 and the miserable owner of size 8 feet. She has regular congress with Luke Costello, a man who wears his leather trousers tight. And she's fond - some might say too fond - of recreational drugs.

Until, that is, everything goes pear-shaped and she finds herself being frog-marched to the Cloisters - Dublin's answer to the Betty Ford Clinic. She's outraged. Surely she's not thin enough to be an addict?

Rachel isn't expecting plump, middle-aged men in brown jumpers, and more group therapy than you can shake a stick at. Heartsick and Lovesick, she seeks redemption in the shape of Chris - a man who might be more trouble than he's worth.

Intriguing take on addiction

I felt educated and intrigued by this story. Told from the POV of an addict I found the reflections, observations and interpretation of encounters and relationships incredibly but fascinatingly ego-centric and juvenile but conversely, incredibly comical. I thoroughly enjoyed the story of Rachel's growth and recovery which was sometimes uncomfortable and confronting but also sometimes equally amusing. Thoroughly enjoyed the book, but I'm not so convinced the narrator was suitably cast. Gerri Halligan has an older voice, so I found it difficult to reconcile with a character supposedly in her 20's read by someone who sounds easily 40+. That said, she has a wonderful knack for characterisation and brought life to all the characters.... but the attempted variations on ethnically-affected American accents weren't so well done.

Best psychotherapy session ever!

I loved Rachel’s story! I actually learned a lot about myself through her story. A much deeper read than I anticipated it to be, I feel like I’ve just left a very valuable psychotherapy session and I’m sad that it’s over.

Light, but deep

An easy light listen with easily understood, enlightening wisdom for all - addicts, or not. I’m sure everyone can learn some truths about themselves and their relationships from this fun, heartening story

Enriching experience.

Great insight into the psyche of all participants involved with someone with an addiction & it’s complexities. Very well narrated, capturing an enormous amount of emotions & the nuances within.
Second time listening.

Brilliant story!

I couldn't stop listening, such a brilliant story and so well portrayed. Highly recommend listening/reading this story. My only negative would be that the narrator sounded a bit too old for the character.
