About this listen

In Essay 63, with characteristic wit and acuity, Don Watson takes us on a journey into the heart of the United States in the year 2016. Plunging into the apparent chaos of the presidential campaign and tracing America's recent past, he puts Hillary Clinton, Donald Trump, and Bernie Sanders in a larger frame. He considers the irresistible pull - for Americans - of American exceptionalism, and asks whether this creed is reaching its limit.

He explores alternative paths the United States could have taken, and asks where its present course might lead Australia as a dutiful ally.

Trump At He Began So Too At the End

Dons language and references are bewildering and Gold Class but his narration could do with some life. A tremendous study of US commentators laced together for a personal view. Finishing it at the end his observations on Trump 2016 election before he won are very much relevant to how he ends in 2021. Make me wish i had the capacity to read more widely and think an observe that bit more deeply. Great work from the Don

Shadow president to be

As always a wonderful and insightful essay by Don Watson, written during the US election campaign. An interesting look at Wisconsin, both progressive and ultra conservative, an analysis of Clinton and Sanders, how they differed and rejoined. My only disappointment was the small amount of commentary on Trump himself. He was like a ghost or the elephant in the room, but somehow it felt as if Don Watson did not believe he could win and therefore didn't spend too much time on him. I would have liked a post election conclusion to the essay.
