Publisher's Summary
What's going on behind the bravado of the ‘average Aussie bloke'?
Rob Mills knows all about putting on a show. Since rising to fame on Australian Idol in 2003, Rob Mills has built a prolific career across television, film, stage and musicals, performing celebrated roles in shows such as Wicked, Jesus Christ Superstar, Grease, Neighbours and Dancing with the Stars. But he also knows that there's often much more going on behind the scenes than what meets the eye.
Following the untimely deaths of two friends, Rob Mills began questioning who he is as a person and a man. Soon his self-reflection shifted outwards, and he got to wondering how he fits into the category of ‘Aussie bloke'. Who is the average Aussie bloke, anyway, and does he even exist? What does he see as his purpose in the world? What is the state of his mental health? What does he think about gender roles, about family, sex and mateship, about violence and vulnerability?
Charged by his naturally inquisitive nature, and with enough smarts to know he doesn't have all the answers, Rob called on the help of experts and friends. This book is the result of all these questions: a fascinating, chatty, insightful and often hilarious deep dive into both Rob's own life and that of the man on the street.

Great book for both men and women
I was hooked from the beginning. Rob did a great job narrating and I really appreciate the vulnerability in the personal stories he shared before exploring key issues men are facing in our society. This is a great book for men who are looking to start taking the steps to work on themselves and equally as useful for women who are working on developing empathy for some of the men in their lives who "just don't get it".

Wonderfully insightful reflection about Australian masculinity
I thoroughly enjoyed Rob’s thoughts and self reflection about his life growing up, career highlights and challenges. Interspersed with this is some careful research and interviews with experts on men’s mental health and men’s groups. I found it very insightful even as a woman, to understand a bit more about masculinity and the male psyche. Rob’s reading is also thoroughly entertaining.

A brilliant reflection on masculinity and vulnerability
What a ride. A searingly honest and open voyage through Robs life. A manual for manhood every man/boy and most of not all women should take a squiz at. Thoroughly enjoyable.

A must listen/read! Especially for men!
Absolutely eye opening! I enjoyed every word and I’m a female, but I would strongly suggest all the males out there have a listen to this one! Rob is super engaging, funny, witty, yet serious and kind. He drops many truth bombs and I took heaps of notes as a result. Brilliant!

Not just an auto biography, well researched oped/essay
not just an autobiography it coalesces with detailed research and interviews on what’s it’s like to be a man in Australia in 2022.,masculinity and mental heath of our men. Must read for those raising boys and young men confused looking for some answers. Well done Rob, I hope this gets more coverage as it’s very informative and educational and might just save a life.

An important read for EVERYONE
I bought this book after seeing Rob in "& Juliet" and thought it would be a case of preaching to the converted. After all, I'm an Aussie guy who already likes musical theatre. There was so much more for me in this than I thought.
It felt like one of those awesome conversations you have with a mate after everyone else has gone, the grog has dried up, and only the truth remains. Where you end up getting to know a close mate more than you thought you could, and feel brave enough to open up to them too.
This book has inspired me to see someone about the niggly back-of-mind mental health issues that I suspect I have, but have ignored.
Thank you, Rob for sharing your story and your self so honestly, and in doing so, allowing me to be a bit more honest with myself. I really think this book will have a positive influence on anyone who reads it.
