About this listen

'A riotous adventure, populated by a cast of vivid, glittering characters' JENNIFER SAINT

'An enthralling tale of adventure, romance, and star-crossed lovers' SUE LYNN TANN

THE GOD OF LOVE HAS FINALLY MET HIS MATCH...

Born into an era of heroes, a prophecy claims that Psyche - Princess of Mycenae - will defeat a monster feared even by the gods themselves. Rebelling against society's traditions, she spends her youth mastering blade and bow, preparing to fulfil her destiny.

But she is soon caught up in powers beyond her control, when the jealous Aphrodite sends the God of Desire, Eros, to deliver a fatal love-curse. The last thing Eros wants is to become involved in the chaos of the mortal world, but when he is pricked by the very arrow intended for Psyche, he is doomed to love a woman who will be torn from him the moment their eyes meet.

Thrown together by fate, headstrong Psyche and world-weary Eros will face challenges greater than they could have ever imagined. And as the Trojan War begins and the whole of the heavens try to keep them apart, will they find their way back to each other before it's too late?

A stunning, exciting and hotly-anticipated feminist retelling of one of the greatest love stories in Greek mythology. Luna McNamara's exquisitely written debut will appeal to fans of Madeline Miller, Jennifer Saint and Susan Stokes-Chapman.

Hard to put this book down

Right from the start to the very end, I found this book difficult to put down. It is a well written tale of Psyche and Eros, with a fresh and visceral perspective of the Greek gods. The author really brings the Greek gods to life in this novel providing complex human emotions and behaviours to all it’s characters. Many of the Greek gods have slightly different personalities from what other stories have portrayed them as, but the perspective of this author is delivered well and seems even more believable.
The relationship developed between Psyche and Eros grips the listener from the very beginning, and you cannot help but root for this couple when they are faced with their challenges along the way. The story starts with back stories for both characters, rather than going straight into when and how the relationship started. Psyche is a fantastic strong heroine, who’s journey through the story takes a surprising turn and shows what it really takes and means to be a ‘real’ Greek hero.
I just loved this story, well worth the read/ or listen on audible.

Wasted potential

I don't know how you take a core story with so much nuance and fumble the ball so hard. There's some beautiful writing buried in this book - Eros talking about longing was so beautiful - but the story just jumps past the most important scenes and dwells on boring, slow passages that nobody cares about. The narrators are mostly fine although they're a bit melodramatic, but they mispronounce so many words I'm convinced nobody listened to this before it was released. A real shame, I really wanted to love this
