About this listen

Arthur Taylor is New Zealand's best known, most influential and colourful career criminal. A household name, he was paroled from prison in 2019 after more than 38 years behind bars.

His life story is nothing short of remarkable. He has more than 150 convictions ranging from bank robberies to fraud, theft, escaping and having weapons and explosives.

He has served in New Zealand's most notorious high security prison, Auckland Prison at Paremoremo, including nine months in solitary confinement.

During his time in prison, Arthur masterminded two particularly audacious prison escapes including a weeks-long caper where he and three others holed up at a millionaire's mansion.

But Arthur isn't what most people might expect.

Now in his 60s and living in Dunedin, Arthur studied law behind bars and took on – and won – cases against Corrections and the Crown, cementing himself as on of New Zealand's foremost authorities on prisoners' rights.

Prison Break reveals Arthur's mistakes, his triumphs and how he outsmarted prison guards – screws' – Corrections and other officials time and time again.

Critic Reviews

"The good, the very bad, and the unbelievable - Arthur Taylor's life has had it all." (Mike White, author of Who Killed Scott Guy?)

"A law professor told me he thought Arthur Taylor is one of New Zealand's great legal minds. It just so happens he's a great storyteller, too." (Jarrod Gilbert, author of Patched: The History of Gangs in New Zealand)

Honest, funny, and shocking.

A great read for anyone interested in the topic. Arthur crossed paths with many people and he tells the story of his life well with humour and seriousness. Once I started listening I couldn’t stop.

A great teacher

A ripping good yarn. but more importantly , Arthur Taylor holds up a mirror to the past of himself , our justice institutions and NZ society in general and challenges all to become the better version of themselves .

Keep this in mind when reading

Entertaining listen. keep in the back of your mind that the author is definitely a narcissistic ideologu. Who fights for the rights of people who do not hesitate to take the rights from their victims. It blatantly one sided, but I defend his right to say it and encourage people to listen and form their own opinions.

A good listen here!

An insightful account of the life and times of Arthur Taylor, I enjoyed learning about his experiences at the hands of the justice and corrections departments and how he stood up to them and won. For those of you who believe in the doctrine of lock em up and throw away the key, listening to this book will certainly challenge your world view. Also, I hope in listening to this book that Arthurs bank account is just that bit better off which will no doubt be of use in the coming year in court.
