Il prequel delle indagini del commissario Mariani. Subito dopo la nomina il giovane Mariani viene assegnato alla questura di Genova. Qui, nel quartiere di Sampierdarena, a ridosso della linea ferroviaria, viene ritrovato il cadavere di un uomo anziano. È senza documenti ma il commissario Mariani lo riconosce subito, è un vecchio amico di famiglia, un ex partigiano che aveva come nome di battaglia Primo.
