About this listen
Trained as a knight, condemned as a heretic, exiled as a convict, Prentice’s every moment is a struggle just to survive.
The Duke is dead and now Duchess Amelia, his young and inexperienced bride, must rule the Western Reach alone. But when an unknown enemy invades her lands, slaughtering all in their path, her knights are too eager for glory to see the danger.
She must turn to Prentice, a convict, wise in the art of war and the only one she can trust despite the dishonor it brings.
Thrust into the front lines, Prentice must fight to survive not only the violence of the enemy, but the inexperience and foolishness of his own commanders. In the midst of conflict, Prentice will earn the battle name Ash, for no matter how intense the fires of war, even if all burns away, Ash will still remain.
Prentice Ash is a medieval fantasy set in a unique but familiar world full of knights, magic, prophecies, and warfare. If you're a fan of Song of Ice & Fire and Dune, you've found your next favorite listen.

A great medieval story with a splash of fantasy
I'm a big fan of fantasy and by extension the medieval time period. Most books I have read are high fantasy and completely focus on the heroic acts of the characters in the story (nothing wrong with that btw). They don't however (generally), give the reader a snapshot of the misery and hardship that was human existance before say the industrial era.
What I really really like about Prentice Ash is that it immerses you in a middle age world of complete hardship, misery and violence for all except the upper classes (you might find it strange that I liked this but that is much closer to a genuine life in the middle ages then other fantasy books provide). You really do get a feel for feudal life in Prentice Ash.
Outside of that you have solid characters. A strong stoic knight/soldier veteran who has been put into slavery, young noble woman (widow) who struggles to find her place in a world run by men, an absolute bastard of a knight to name a few.
There is also a fantastic mystical element to the story.
Anyone who likes the medieval setting really should give this world a solid go.

Fantastic and captivating story
Thoroughly enjoyed this book and found both Amelia and Prentice compelling as characters. The battles are graphic and detailed enough to transport you as the listener into that setting. There is a very good chance you'll finish the story in one or two sittings. Narrator also does an excellent job with this story, his voice and pronunciation just fits this type of fantasy. I look forward to more books!
