Publisher's Summary

Winner of the 2017 Ned Kelly Award

Another thrilling mystery featuring Detective Sean Duffy and his most dangerous investigation yet.

Belfast, 1988. A man is found dead, killed with a bolt from a crossbow in front of his house. This is no hunting accident. But uncovering who is responsible for the murder will take Detective Sean Duffy down his most dangerous road yet, a road that leads to a lonely clearing on a high bog where three masked gunmen will force Duffy to dig his own grave.

Hunted by forces unknown, threatened by Internal Affairs, and with his relationship on the rocks, Duffy will need all his wits to get out of this investigation in one piece.

Critic Reviews

"Narrator Gerard Doyle has provided the voice of Adrian McKinty's Sean Duffy since the first audiobook of the series. Returning for Book 6, he's more in tune with Duffy's complexity than ever before.... McKinty's blend of dark drama with perfectly timed humor and intensely plotted action is performed by Doyle as though he's intimately familiar with Duffy's mind, heart, and body. Listeners comprehend the vastness of Duffy's emotion without a caricatured delivery. Doyle delivers another winning narration." ( AudioFile)

Magnificent Duffy, stellar reading

Duffy gets better & better. The reading is superb. Duffy's prayers to the Virgin are answered. After many heart wrenching and heart breaking twists & turns, we have what counts as a happy ending.

Detective Sean Duffy is Netflix worthy

Sad to finish the series (for the second time!). The characters so well developed, the historical setting (1980s Northern Ireland), the Irish humour, the incredible narration, make this Adrian MKinty series so enjoyable. Normally don't love so much bad language, but it fit the context/characters.

Utterly gripping and entertaining!

As a Catholic policeman in the RUC in 1988 Belfast, DI Sean Duffy walks a tightrope - he’s distrusted by the Protestant establishment and is seen as a traitor by the Catholic paramilitaries. Two drug dealers are killed with crossbow arrows but, puzzlingly, the Irish paramilitary groups seem reluctant to claim responsibility. Sean is even more puzzled when his involvement in the case seems to trigger multiple IRA hit squads. Maybe it’s time to pack it all in while he’s still breathing! I absolutely loved this police procedural, the gripping story had a lot of moving parts, red herrings, and significant insights into the Troubles. Best of all, it really showcased Sean’s dogged, intelligent character. Narrating from Sean’s POV, Irish voice artist Gerard Doyle really captures the tension and humour in these stories (currently free on the Audible Plus catalogue).

Great yarn

Loved the Sean and his team, witty, human and imperfect but who works with honesty and integrity. Carried along by a great story and easy banter.

Another great Sean Duffy novel

A great audio to listen to. Sean continues to defy his immediate bosses, and rouse the support from his team. But his heavy drinking and drugging days are now much reduced, He now has family responsibilities and this more tender side of Sean is a delight to behold. I thoroughly recommend this audio.
