About this listen
Damelas Chademantaigne picked a poor night to flee a judicial duel.
He has precious little hope of escaping the wrath of the Vixen, the most feared duellist in the entire city, until he stumbles through the stage doors of the magnificent Operato Belleza and tricks his way into the company of actors. An archaic law provides a temporary respite from his troubles - until one night a ghostly voice in his head causes Damelas to fumble his lines, inadvertently blurting out a dreadful truth: the city's most legendary hero may actually be a traitor and a brutal murderer.
With only the help of his boisterous and lusty friend Bereto, a beautiful assassin whose target may well be Damelas himself, and a company of misfit actors who'd just as soon see him dead, this failed grandson of two Greatcoats must somehow find within himself the courage to dig up long-buried truths before a ruthless band of bravos known as the Iron Orchids come for his head.
Oh, and there's still that matter of the Vixen waiting to duel him . . .©2021 Sebastien de Castell (P)2021 Quercus Editions Limited

Mixed Feelings
Ok I've got mixed feelings on this one. This series has a different feel than the author's previous serious The Greatcoats which I would've thought would've been a good thing but after listening to this I'm not so sure.
PROS
1. Great voice acting.
2. Great writing that flows effortlessly from one paragraph to the next.
3. Pacing was decent though I would've liked things to be sped up a little.
4. The story itself was fairly good (but has negative aspects, see below).
CONS
1. My biggest issue is that the whole story just feel too melodramatic (ironic yes). Half the time I was wondering why the story had to be told in the overly theatrical way it was and why not in a more logical way. Leads onto my 2nd criticism.
2. My credulity was stretched many times throughout the story. The premise of the story was really hard to take seriously. Having to perform a play to uncover a mysterious sounds cool on paper but was just strange listening to it.
3. I wasn't overly fond of any of the characters. While I loved the 3 from the Greatcoats, I found myself struggling to empathise with Damelas. He's constantly self-deprecating and has no natural skill apart from his wit.
His romantic interest story felt really forced and I feel his relationship to the other characters wasn't developed well.
