About this listen
Audiobook two of the Dark Imperium trilogy.
As the Plague Wars rage on, the Emperor's will manifests in Ultramar through miracles that confound the primarch Roboute Guilliman, even as he must rely on them when he faces his traitorous brother, Mortarion.
Listen to it because
The battle between faith and science lies at the heart of Warhammer 40,000. Guy Haley explores it here as never before, through the eyes of Roboute Guilliman - the ultimate believer in rationality and the Imperial Truth.
The story
In the void and upon the worlds of Greater Ultramar, the battle for the Imperium continues.
Intent on rebuilding his home realm and using it as a base to reconstruct the ravaged stellar empire of mankind, the returned primarch, Roboute Guilliman, proceeds with his war to drive Mortarion and his Death Guard Traitor Legion from the domain of the Ultramarines.
But when Guilliman brings his brother to battle upon the diseased plains of Parmenio, the intervention of a greater power in their fraternal struggle threatens to upend the Imperial Regent’s understanding of the galaxy, and his place within it.
Primarchs and ideologies clash in this thrilling second part of the Dark Imperium trilogy.
Written by Guy Haley. Narrated by John Banks.

Fantastic Narration
John Banks' performance is outstanding. Don't make the same mistake I did and have the audio cranked to hear over the car's heater because when he starts yelling it's brown trousers time.

Good but . . .
Thoroughly enjoyed this 2nd instalment of the series and looking forward to hearing how this wraps up in the 3rd. I am always thankful for more fleshing out of the 40K universe but the writing now, in comparison to the early 40K/Horus Heresy books feels nerfed. As said Im still enjoying modern 40K, just it’s lost a level of immersive detail which was also delivered in a serious yet non boring manner. . . or maybe Im just obsolete with a filtered memory 😄 Plague War = Worth a listen

Guilliman is cool, actually
The more I read, the more I come to like Guilliman as a character rather than just a meme.

Guilliman's and Mortarion's voices are legit
Overall the voice acting is good for all the characters, but feels super appropriate for the Primarchs.

IIS
You remember how Saturday morning cartoons were just ads for action figures ? So there are a couple chapters that read like ads for how awesome primaris marines are (get yours today!).
Apart from those changers it’s an ok story, exploring some interesting aspects of guillemans ascension.
As a side note it continues the super cringe tradition of grimdark writers thinking that being female is sufficient characterisation for a character. One character is repeatedly just called “the girl” even in universe, by female nuns who live solely among females. “Yes of course Sister , I’ll get The Girl …among this platoon of 30 women … should be easy to find…
