Publisher's Summary

Secret treasures and otherworldly dangers await a band of adventurers in the second book of this fantasy series set within the Arcane Ascension universe.

After the Tortoise Spire climb claims three members of Team Guiding Star Legacy, surviving combat experts Nieve and Hane—teammates by chance if not by choice—cope with their losses by joining another delving group to ascend Tiger Spire. Allied with bickering siblings Rose and Mason, an Architect and a Transmuter, and the Biomancer Lief, they’re led by Odette, an Analyst, who has meticulously studied the spire’s scenarios to locate the mythical Vault of Shadows and claim its priceless treasures.

Their quest takes them aboard a train transporting rare cargo, but their mission is vague. Odette believes they’re either supposed to protect the cargo or capture someone. As the team splits into factions to solve the mystery, they encounter the notorious thief known as the Magpie. Sa’rhi Nereux is a Controller, commanding powerful minions to help them steal a creature capable of granting life or death with a single bite.

Even if the adventurers are victorious, greater threats await them within the spire if they’re to unearth the Vault of Shadows. Nieve, still grieving her lost companions, wants to befriend her new team to face these threats together. But Hane prefers distance, even from Nieve, leaving her to bond instead with a being of unimaginable power...

Excellent follow up

After the first book, I wasn't sure how the story would progress, but I was enthralled by the new adventure, challenges and characters. The experience that Nieve, Sage and Hane go through is thoughtfully structured and how they each deal with it provides a new window into their personalities.
Climbing a new spire gives appreciation for the world that is being built and showcasing different aspects. it's always a pleasure to discover more about
As always, Emily and Travis make the characters alive and convey the perfect emotions throughout.

A step down from the first book

Fantastic voice acting and dynamic combat. But I found it difficult to care for the characters or the outcome of 90 percent of the story. The end of the book was the only real highlight of the story for me.

Ok story ruined by forced wokeness

Getting pretty over this Author's obsession with pushing woke gender politics simply for the fact that it's there, when it actually contributes nothing to the story while breaking immersion by how cringe it is. its really not good enough to keep putting up with it.
"before we begin, what pronoun should it refer to you by?"
"asking consent is important." when in the context would make it pretty damn weird.
the whole thing is a cringe fest, get some help.

Better than the last

Overall great. A bit slow through the middle, the train sequence dragged on too long. Once that ended I thought it was great.

solid characters and motivations.

coming from.arcane ascension this series really feels more... I dunno, tastefully executed with the characters, less comic book feeling. better. always loved the settings but struggled with some of the characters. so I had a really good time with this one. ❤️

So inclusive it excludes normal people

The first book in the series was great apart from the struggle to adapt to the use of plural pronouns for a single person but decided to give this book a go to see if it got any better.

Andrew Rowe's unique story telling, combat style and magic system was great as always but it was overshadowed by the completely unnecessary strives to include every minority in the LGBTQ+ spectrum into the story but forgot to include any heterosexual relationship at all. I was left happy that there was some cute little love interests growing but felt like it was a total let down that there was literally nothing I could relate to as a straight person and in fact I felt like if was purposely done and left a sour taste in my mouth on completion of the story.

I feel like this story has basically been purpose written for the minorities rather than a story being written with minorities as part of the story. Will not be continuing with the series - very disappointed.
