About this listen

On a remote Highland mountain, the body of Elaine Buxton is burning. All that will be left to identify the respected lawyer are her teeth and a fragment of clothing.

In the concealed back room of a house in Edinburgh, the real Elaine Buxton screams into the darkness…

Detective Inspector Luc Callanach has barely set foot in his new office when Elaine’s missing persons case is escalated to a murder investigation. Having left behind a promising career at Interpol, he’s eager to prove himself to his new team. But Edinburgh, he discovers, is a long way from Lyon, and Elaine’s killer has covered his tracks with meticulous care.

It’s not long before another successful woman is abducted from her doorstep, and Callanach finds himself in a race against the clock. Or so he believes … The real fate of the women will prove more twisted than he could have ever imagined.

Fans of Angela Marson, Mark Billingham and M. J. Aldridge will be gripped by this chilling journey into the mind of a troubled killer.

Enjoyable

A genuine one-sitting book. The plotting and sub-plotting are meticulous and the characters are well-rounded and maintained my interest from beginning to end.
Bring on book two!

Hercule Poirot as underwear model

This is a gripping story - although the emphasis is on the gore of serial killing rather than the police procedural. Personally I'd prefer more of the procedural, which is not Fields' strong point. The twists and turns of the narrative are good in themselves but there's a level of detail missing that for me makes the whole thing lack plausibility at times. This is most apparent in the serial killer's lair and in the final scenes. The detail we're given is not enough to explain why things play out as they do (hard to say more without spoilers but the physical descriptions of violent acts, restraint and interactions didn't always ring true).

Luc Callanach is a bit of cliche - a glamorous but wreckless DI with a French accent who used to be an underwear model (oh please!). Also, if he'd spent his early years in Scotland speaking English, there's no way he'd have trouble with 'th' and Scottish-English vowels, so the Hercule Poirot accent is a bit ridiculous. That said, the narrator is very good--and the book describes him as having an accent. This is another example of how Fields doesn't really think things through. It's a very plot driven novel with things made up for convenience. i agree with other reviews about the lack of research into not only police procedure but church matters--and also PTSD. And as for Luc racing off to a crime scene with a member of the public and no back up--
OMG it makes me want to sack him!

Intriguing plot and fabulous characters

Looking forward to this series. Two great characters in the lead with excellent chemistry. Set in the wonderful city of Edinburgh, two plots are cleverly wound together with just enough twists to keep you listening. Can’t wait to listen to book two with the great voice and easy characterisation of the narrator.. Highly recommended!

2.5 star story with 5 star narration

2.5 stars rounded up for a very well narrated audiobook.
Okay, I don't ever read crime/thriller/horror but I've been in a book slump so I picked up this on the audible reccomendations - lots of reviews of "Wow! Amazing! Plot twist! Didn't see that coming!"
The narration was fantastic and kept me interested most of the way through - but I didn't feel like there was any real thrill or crime mystery - and it felt a bit disjointed and the stories felt unrelated.. not for me..

Definitely not for the squeamish.

This story was graphically gory and depicts psychotic levels of violence. I doubt I would want to read another book by this author. The story borders on the ludicrous, especially when dealing with the Roman Catholic Church.

The main character, an ex-Interpol officer, is a humourless but oh-so-handsome French hunk transplanted to Edinburgh and Police Scotland. Was the author dreaming of a TV series, perhaps?

There is little in this tale that feels believable, and since there is no "who-dunnit" suspense, I was unable to stick with to the end.

The narration was, as always with Robin Laing, excellent.
