In un ricco appartamento vicino Mergellina vengono trovati i cadaveri di un funzionario della Milizia, Emanuele Garofalo, e di sua moglie Costanza. La statuina di san Giuseppe, patrono dei lavoratori, giace infranta a terra. Sulla scena del delitto, Ricciardi, che ha l'amaro dono di vedere e sentire i morti ammazzati, ascolta le ultime frasi della coppia, che non gli dicono granché.
Il commissario dovrà girare a lungo, e sempre piú in corsa contro il tempo, per le strade di Napoli per arrivare alla verità.
