About this listen

Constable Paul Hirschhausen runs a one-cop station in the dry farming country south of the Flinders Ranges. He’s still new in town but the community work - welfare checks and working bees - is starting to pay off. Now Christmas is here and, apart from a grass fire, two boys stealing a ute and Brenda Flann entering the front bar of the pub without exiting her car, Hirsch’s life has been peaceful. Until he’s called to a strange, vicious incident in Kitchener Street. And Sydney police ask him to look in on a family living outside town on a forgotten back road…. Suddenly, it doesn’t look like a season of goodwill at all.

Critic Reviews

"Disher is the gold standard for rural noir." (Chris Hammer)

“An utterly compelling mystery with rare heart and humanity. If you enjoyed Jane Harper’s The Lost Man, this novel is for you." (Dervla McTiernan)

“A scorchingly good novel." (Michael Robotham)

Very slow for the first 3rd

Very good story but oh so slow for the first third - was screaming to get on with it!

Better than the First!

It might have been the narrator, but I think the story was better as well.
A good whodunit!
Lots of twists and turns.
Some sad bits and happy bits all coming together to keep the reader listening.

Love Aussie books and Aussie authors.
I was never a fan of crime and cop stories but Garry Disher has reeled me in.

Excellent narrator.

Disher places the reader in the landscape and among the characters. A very Australian novel without being corny. Loved the narrator and the story.

BRILLIANT

Binged this wonderful book Knowing the mid north made it even more compelling. From the first chapter to the last the plot was a blend of rural life reality and gritty crime. wonderfully narrated. PEACE highly recommend.

Terrific

Slow and steady, real out back feel. You can almost smell the gum trees, looking forward to book 3.

Really enjoyed listening

A great story. Another binge listen. Knowing the area I’m easily visualising the country and abandoned ruins.
Particularly intriguing was the early settlers journals and the rock paintings. Makes me want to jump in the car and go adventuring.
Thank you ❤️

Loved it

I enjoyed the flow of the story and the narrator is perfect. It is authentically Australian , without being twee.

Brilliant plot and outstanding narration

Remarkable weaving of lives of all strata in society with their struggle for meaning and existence - some rising above expectations and others simply disappointingly demonstrating the human condition. Some content with little, while others never satisfied with much. There is love, tenderness, kindness, greed and hate - some of it raw and some subtle- but beautifully crafted and told.

Justice prevails

slow to start but listen, it ALL comes together at the end. I enjoy these books where you can have your theories on who did it and not like a lot lately when the villian is not introduced until the end
