About this listen
In this book, her follow-up to the best seller Discipline Without Damage, Dr. Lapointe advises new parents how to put their child on a path to optimal development during the crucial early years.
The baby and toddler years are the most important period for any child's emotional and psychological development. Parents naturally want to do what's best for their kids, but they often struggle to know what that is, especially when dealing with the big "battlegrounds" of sleep, feeding, and managing aggression.
The latest scientific research indicates that it is through a strong and stable sense of connection to their parents that children learn how to regulate their emotions, master social skills, and develop a sense of identity. Unfortunately, many of the currently accepted parenting practices and traditional attitudes disrupt healthy connection rather than foster it, leading to behavioral issues and emotional problems that can last into adulthood.
Dr. Lapointe helps parents to understand how mindful and conscious parenting can help them to avoid passing unhealthy patterns down from one generation to the next. Rooted in compassion and understanding, Parenting Right from the Start shows parents how to build a firm, caring presence in the early years that a child can lean into for a lifetime.

Warm, educational and empowering. Highly recommend
Vanessa has a way of conveying the substance of text books into a very warm, practical and empowering read/listen. She has a brilliant way of conveying the message as a teacher that can be trusted but in a way that comes from a place of working alongside than over; She is very relational. The content is meaty and informative but easy to digest and kudos to Adrienne Fish whose tone and overall delivery were outstanding. Vanessa's book is also very supportive and while I hoped to feel more motivated, those expectations were very much exceeded and among the practical learnings, her words "You've got this" have sounded in my head when the confidence has been teetering and/or I've been dealing with a challenging situation - most helpful.
I've just bought "discipline without damage" too and now have high expectations of that.

Invaluable content for Caregivers
The information presented in this book is invaluable, and is written in a way that is easy to understand and implement in day to day life.
The narration of this book however starts off rather un-engaging, as the narrator uses quite a monotone voice, making it difficult to listen for long periods. I feel about half way through the book, the narrator has audibly loosened up, and becomes a little more engaging, which was a nice change.

Cathartic and hopeful
Vanessa deals with how you as the parent were parented at the same time as showing you an evidence-based approach to good parenting. It was healing to think through my childhood and understand that bits of it were definitely not ok. I think that if I didn't go through this process I would put my little one through the same crap I went through. I highly recommend this book!
