Publisher's Summary

A stunning look at World War II from the other side.... From the turret of a German tank, Colonel Hans von Luck commanded Rommel's 7th and then 21st Panzer Division. El Alamein, Kasserine Pass, Poland, Belgium, Normandy on D-Day, the disastrous Russian front - von Luck fought there with some of the best soldiers in the world. German soldiers. Awarded the German Cross in Gold and the Knight's Cross, von Luck writes as an officer and a gentleman. Told with the vivid detail of an impassioned eyewitness, his rare and moving memoir has become a classic in the literature of World War II, a first-person chronicle of the glory - and the inevitable tragedy - of a superb soldier fighting Hitler's war.

An incredible experience of the war

A commander who sees action in almost all the theatres of the war and often at the most crucial moments. Extremely dignified and insightful. A credit to Germany and the Prussian military tradition

Chivalry is not dead

Chivalry is not dead, it is embodied in the likes of Hans Von Luck. Absolutely loved this personal, raw account of the war by Hans. The tale he's told certainly brings to light the German side of the war which is often not told, or has often been presented with bias, and overshadowed by the stories of the victors. Hans is truly an outstanding individual who's sense of humanity and life is deeply moving.

Good overview of the German perspective

Couldn't stop listen to the Audio book, the narration was very good and the story was both disturbing and exciting, to hear of all fronts in WW2. A good and courageous colonel was lost on 1/8/1997.

One of the most exciting accounts of WW2

I really enjoyed hearing from the side of a German officer. His telling of his time during the war on all fronts was exciting, just as much as his time in captivity and his life after. Highly recommend.

The other side

Listening to the perspective from the German side of WW2, I can only feel compassion. History is usually view in one-sided a fashion, depending on which side you’re on. This is from Hans von Luck, a gentleman soldier who lets us know what it was like from the other side.

Panzer Commander

What a remarkable memoir. The only thing that would say is the choice of narrator was a little off..a bit dry at times however, content kept me glued to it.

A great tale

An excellent tale, telling a little told side of the Second World War.

Shows that the usual generalisations made about Germans in the war can be inaccurate, and indeed soviets post war and I am always amazed at the civility that can be found in the unlikely of situations.

WW2 through German eyes

Another amazing tale of survival during and after WW2. Gives a perspective from German point of view across different theatres.

Amazing insight

What was one of the most memorable moments of Panzer Commander?

The brutal murder of a German Army NCO by Nazi henchmen for the crime of having a meal in a tavern while his vehicle was being repaired.

Any additional comments?

Amazing insight into a German Army officer combat experiences.
