酒のしくじりで寄席に出られなくなった孝蔵は、落語以外に自分の生きる道はないと痛感。高座復帰後は、少しずつ人気も上昇し、昭和14年、念願の五代目・古今亭志ん生を襲名。
戦後は名人・文楽と並び称されるほどの存在になり、[飲む・打つ・買う]は相変らずながらも、生活が安定していく。しかし、下積み時代の仲間が次々とこの世を去っていき、脳出血で倒れた志ん生も次第に高座から遠ざかってゆく……。
下巻では不世出の天才落語家・志ん生の、戦前、戦中、戦後と駆け抜けた破天荒な人生を描く。
