Publisher's Summary

With an introduction read by Max Hastings. The famous D-Day landings of 6 June, 1944, marked the beginning of Operation Overlord, the battle for the liberation of Europe.

Republished as part of the Pan Military Classics series, Max Hastings’ acclaimed account overturns many traditional legends in this memorable study. Drawing together the eyewitness accounts of survivors from both sides, plus a wealth of previously untapped sources and documents, Overlord provides a brilliant, controversial perspective on the devastating battle for Normandy. Max Hastings, author of over 20 books, was born in 1945. He was a scholar at Charterhouse and University College, Oxford, before working as foreign correspondent for newspapers and BBC television, reporting from over 50 countries. He was editor of the Daily Telegraph for almost a decade, and then for six years edited the Evening Standard. He has won many awards for his journalism, particularly for his dispatches from the South Atlantic in 1982. He was knighted in 2002.

Interesting to learn it was won by attrition

Very good facts. Its interesting to note the Germans had superior everything and they only really lost due to shortage of men and material....not tactics....or quality of men...Many thanks Mr Hastings for bringing us the truth.

Detail is Everything!

This book provides a detailed presenter of the complexities of both sides of the Normandy Theatre, although greater detail is presented from Allied Forces side (or maybe that was was my biased listening?).. As an eBook, it is sometimes difficult to follow the numerical descriptors when they are provided as long sentences but the occasional rewind and pencil jotting quickly resolved this challenge. As for any book on "Over Lord", there is the usual speculation on Montgomery and his idiosyncrasies but this didn't take away from the book's well researched attention to detail. Definitely worth the listen for those with a bug for technically enhanced military history.

A terrific précis of the campaign, drawing from big picture analysis and first hand accounts. Terrific reading by the narrator whose ability with accents is beyond belief!!

A must read to get a fresh and unbiased account and analysis of the Western Fronts critical period.

Superb detailed and balanced account of D Day and Overlord

Once again Max Hastings has provided a detailed, insightful recounting of major WW2
campaign. It is most engagingly read. A highlight is his balanced and well researched assessments that consider both sides and all forces. They are subjected to his critical eye that takes full advantage of his scholarship of the Bomber campaign and that of the Das Reich Division. Superb!
