Som mange andre ambitiøse bjergbestigere drog Beck Weathers i maj 1996 mod toppen af verdens højeste bjerg. Under topforsøget eksploderede en rasende storm på Everest og resulterede i den hidtil mest tragiske dag på bjerget nogensinde, hvor ni mennesker mistede livet. Også Weathers blev fanget i stormen og måtte kaempe for sit liv højt oppe på bjerget.
