A disruptive book in a time needing disruption
Everybody is worried about something.
Many of us are in, or have been in jobs that have left us doubting our self-worth, undermining our confidence and effectively making us feel helpless to improve our lot. This book is about changing that mindset.
Thanks to COVID-19, if you have a stable job, and it puts food on the table just now, for many unhappy people, that means 'sucking it up' even if your workplace, your boss or your co-worker(s) are making your life miserable. Heather talks about disrupting the false sense of security that having a job today gives you, even if it is ruining your health (physical or mental).
Heather highlights her own experience, starting out in her own business and being disrupted by COVID-19 just as it was starting to take off. She also talks about multiple setbacks, and how others (including her) aren't always as 'perfect' as we might think - other people can be a mess too, but are better at concealing it. She constantly reminds her readers and listeners to place value in themselves and remember what is important to them to drive themselves through the challenges that they face.
I enjoyed the book, but the audiobook has additional insights as she reflects upon what she wrote with 20/20 hindsight that make it even more worthwhile. The audiobook also allowed her to show more of her personality, and she is pleasant to listen to - there are plenty of authors who are far better writers than narrators. She can do both well.
I would love to see (and hear) her thoughts on what companies can do to keep employees, and to ensure that toxic behaviours are identified, confronted and pushed out the door. She has written two awesome books for employees wanting to 'escape' and helping them to find the confidence to move on to better places. I would love to hear her views on what businesses can do to weed out the managers that have made books like her so necessary.
I enjoy her work and hope one day to get her to sign my copy of this book. It is worth every penny.
