About this listen

In 2017, world-class ultrarunner Hillary Allen was at the top of her sport - and it felt like she was running on top of the world as she competed in Norway's Tromsø Skyrace. Allen was nearly halfway through the 50-kilometer race when she fell 150 feet off an exposed ridge, fracturing her back and breaking multiple ribs, both feet, and both of her lower arms. Beginning with the dramatic story of her accident and rescue, Out and Back: A Runner's Story of Survival Against All Odds recounts Allen's fight to return to the life she loves.

With vulnerability that reveals remarkable strength and introspection that yields wisdom, Allen shares the story of her recovery both physically and mentally, and hard-earned knowledge that the path forward is not always linear, that healing takes time, and that the process of rediscovery is ongoing as she learns what it takes to survive - and thrive. Out and Back is an inspiration to anyone who knows what it means to reclaim and rebuild your life, one day and one step at a time.

Truly inspiring!!!!

What an inspirational story of never giving up but an honest reflection of how hard recovering from injuries would be. A great read for anyone dealing with tough times and inspiring to never give up no matter how hard it may be.

Great story of recovery

I thought this was a fantastic story of recovery and passion for life. Hillary tells her story well and doesn't hide the hard parts. Some parts felt a bit longer than necessary but overall a great read.

resilience, strength & humilty

Hillary's story reminds us what we are capable of despite the tough cards we are dealt with throughout life. Never give up on something we love even when it feels really hard at times! Very well written, authentic and Hilary narrating the book makes it all the more personal. If you have a passion in life that has been put on pause due to illness or injury, you have to listen to this book to help you in your own journey.

Hillary you rock!!

Inspiring, honest and an amazing story. Hillary’s voice telling her incredible story has accompanied me on my own trail runs and somehow had the perfect piece of wisdom I needed to hear at different moments along the way.

Honest, raw and insightful

As an ultra runner myself, albeit no where near the pointy end, so much of Hilary’s words resonated. It’s not a stretch to imagine how easily a fall like that could happen yet it rarely does, not to that degree - but here she is, alive and running again. My own past injuries and thoughts I’d never run or be active again came back in waves as the story unfolded - the tears, the frustration, the grief of the thought of losing “who you are”, and the dreadful loss of autonomy and independence that looking back fills us with the deepest gratitude to those who came to help, despite our darkness, anyway. A fab listen for any runner or athlete, especially an injured one.
