Pretty, unworldly Sophia is twenty-one years old and hastily married to a young painter called Charles. Unmissable!!!

Beautifully read. Wonderful writing and an unusual and totally engaging style of story telling. Barbara Comyns has been largely forgotten but deserves to be rediscovered and enjoyed by readers and listeners. She writes about difficult topics with such freshness and not a hint of melodrama or exaggeration. This is a window into a different time and a world past but the issues are universal and timeless.
