About this listen

A spare yet eloquent, bittersweet yet inspiring story of a man and a woman who, in advanced age, come together to wrestle with the events of their lives and their hopes for the imminent future.

In the familiar setting of Holt, Colorado, home to all of Kent Haruf's inimitable fiction, Addie Moore pays an unexpected visit to a neighbor, Louis Waters. Her husband died years ago, as did his wife, and in such a small town they naturally have known of each other for decades; in fact, Addie was quite fond of Louis's wife. His daughter lives hours away in Colorado Springs, her son even farther away in Grand Junction, and Addie and Louis have long been living alone in houses now empty of family, the nights so terribly lonely, especially with no one to talk with.

Their brave adventures - their pleasures and their difficulties - are hugely involving and truly resonant, making Our Souls at Night the perfect final installment to this beloved writer's enduring contribution to American literature.

A story that stays with you

What a beautiful, reflective journey. A quiet gem.
I wondered about the narration style for a while - the intention becomes clear. I loved the deep tone of the voice.

Truly delightful.

I believe this is the authors final work and it is a masterpiece.
Gentle and empathetic, the people in this book are drawn beautifully ,the writing is understated and elegant the characters are beautiful in their approach to a surprising friendship, which raises eyebrows in a small town.
This is a gem.

great book of love

I've never read smth like that but I was sad at the end but it needs to be a lesson for all of us: parents and their kids need to be separated. and we need to think how we bring up our children (I don't have them), but what I want to do just slap Gene's face. i hate people who are unhappy and make others unhappy too. we just need to think about our actions and what we do and don't disscuss and don't judge others.

Souls at night

Amazing I can identify with both characters and felt that they were so honest and with the sunset of their lives looming they found joy in each other
Pity the son had no insight to that joy

Made me a better person

One of the most heart warming book. Delightful, simple story but so rich in wisdom, deep. If more people will read this we will be more kind to each other.

a beautiful and poignant book

it's a shame that such a wonderful story was spoilt by terrible narration. The voices all sounded the name with very little inflection.
most Audible narrators are excellent but this one unfortunately is not.
