Publisher's Summary

In the shouted words of a woman bound for Auschwitz to a man about to escape from a cattle car, "If you get out, maybe you can tell the story! Who else will tell it?"

Our Crime Was Being Jewish contains 576 vivid memories of 358 Holocaust survivors. These are the true, insider stories of victims, told in their own words. They include the experiences of teenagers who saw their parents and siblings sent to the gas chambers; of starving children beaten for trying to steal a morsel of food; of people who saw their friends commit suicide to save themselves from the daily agony they endured. The recollections are from the start of the war - the home invasions, the Gestapo busts, and the ghettos - as well as the daily hell of the concentration camps and what actually happened inside.

Six million Jews were killed in the Holocaust, and this hefty collection of stories told by its survivors is one of the most important books of our time. It was compiled by award-winning author Anthony S. Pitch, who worked with sources such as the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum to get survivors' stories compiled together and to supplement them with images from the war. These memories must be told and held on to so what happened is documented; so the lives of those who perished are not forgotten; so history does not repeat itself.

Excellent, engaging and deeply moving

This book offers a breadth of insights into the Holocaust which has been impeccably curated to represent a range of perspectives from all over the world. Carefully sourced, the accounts are undeniably moving and are an excellent entry point for those wanting to learn more about this stage in our history. The narration was brilliant with a range of voices and approaches used according to the nature of the case being shared. My only concern was a doubling up of a couple of chapters early on which may have been an error in recording.

disturbing

Found the story of thing that were done during this period quite disturbing. To think all this happened and people turned a blind eye to how other people brainwashed so call normal people to allow ths to happen. knowing how the perpetrators did this and got away with it. To the survives I wish you well and remain strong

The stories from holocaust survivors are empowering and inspiring

Each holocaust survivor is a true hero for managing to survive such dark times in human history. We must never forget the power of an idea, and the darkest point in human history the likes of which even Ivan the Terrible would have found sickening.

When I begin to feel down or defeated, I remember a testimony from one of the holocaust survivors and suddenly, I get a little bit of hope.

My grandmother went through the holocaust, she was displaced and forced to work in an ammunition's factory. Her Immigration records to Australia are partially sealed and she came with no IDs, my family in Poland is untraceable. She never spoke a word of the holocaust or what she experienced. She did everything she could to prevent anyone knowing her story and what she went through.
