About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

'I was 21 years old when I found myself on the front stoop of the Playboy Mansion, its ornate front door feeling like a route to success. I want to tell the real story of my time there - the good and the bad, the dark and the light. The story I wish I'd heard as a young woman trying to find my way in the world. Before I showed up at a party, allowed myself to stay, and made the decisions that would shape my life.'

In 2008 the Playboy mansion became Crystal Harris's sanctuary - a shimmering vestige of power and opportunity. Within months she had ascended its hierarchical system to become Hugh Hefner's top girlfriend. But her new home came at a cost. Forced to follow strict rules which governed everything from her appearance to behaviour, she began to lose her identity. By the time she married Hef in 2012, the mansion had become her prison.

Before he passed away in 2017, Hef made Crystal promise to only say good things about the decade she spent in his world. After years of silence, in this gripping and honest memoir Crystal finally exposes the toxic culture at Playboy's core and the devastating effect it had on her health. In a world where so many still strive to achieve impossible beauty standards formed by the male gaze at the expense of their happiness, her extraordinary story of misogyny and objectification and ultimate journey to self-discovery reveals eye-opening lessons that are relevant to us all.

Beautiful story

This has given me so much strength to know my worth, learning how to say no and saying how I really feel.. I can relate to so many of her stories. She is strong and ambitious. I laughed and cried, mostly cried.. There was one chapter I couldn’t stop smiling. I’m so happy for you. You’re amazing Crystal. Thank you.
I am so motivated to be the best version of myself. Thanks again for sharing.

Boring and repetitive

Everything could have been said in two chapters and after a while everything became predictable. The message from this read is that Hugh Hefner was a really awful person and that it was all about him. In my opinion he was a really bad example to how a man should treat a woman.

Surprisingly good!

Exceeded my expectations and narrated well. Crystal was wiser beyond her years and this is very insightful as to what things were like inside the mansion. Highly recommend.

Telling it like it was

I don't even know how I came across this to listen to on Audible. I have no interest in Hugh Hefner nor his exes. However I found myself listening to this and was taken. I'm a 59 yr old Australian woman who can't stand the American dream bullshit in general. But I related to a lot of what she spoke about. Willingly going into a jail like situation and finding as much as she wanted to leave she couldn't or wouldn't. It speaks so much to disempowered women from Narcissistic men. Trapped like a bird with its wings clipped. Yet as Crystal Harris reiterates throughout her story telling, she knew what she was getting herself into yet at the same time desperate to get out. Unless you've been in similar circumstances within a cult or within a narcissistic relationship, you won't get it. I think I enjoyed it more by listening to herself narrate the entire book as opposed to me reading a hard copy. What a journey for that young woman and all the women before her. Getting used by men. Sad but true. Just look at the Arab states today in 2024. Still throwing women out of high rise buildings when they are bored of them. But you don't hear about that I'm mainstream media. Because of MONEY!!! THE ROOT OF ALL EVIL.

Cristal Hefner

Very thought provoking . Sad that women allow themselves to be objectified and can see how this happened .

Sadly no depth

I love reading/listening go autobiography’s and memoirs this sadly had no real depth it glossed over details conversations ect.. also she speaks very slowly put Audio to 1.25 speed- I felt there was so much missing and that she could have use actually interactions with people to demonstrate her experience, just no real interactions or recollections of conversation and experiences with people. Crystal doesn’t put her self as a negative once and really portrays herself as a victim every person has multiple sides to them but this story is only her in a positive light, I also find it interesting that she didn’t mention the NDAs she made many people at the mansion sign in the later years because their is no way they can rebut any of her stories for fear of what they signed. Small things I find annoying is when she says a decade(you where with Hef for 8 and a half years as you left for more then 6 months) she says in the end there are no bikini photos on her Instagram anymore and she won’t do that there about 10 on her Insta just some of the small contradictions that are easy to disprove

So many tears!

It was a very raw insight to her life, not only in the mansion but the events that occurred before and after! I really enjoyed listening to Crystal share her life again with us.

Crystal’s Heart

I loved crystal’s sincerity in telling her true feelings, fears and struggles . I’m happy she could come to terms with the situation in which the Playboy mansion attraction had put her in at such a young age and was able to tell young women about her deception of beauty and reality of the Hefner myth. I grew up in that era.
