Publisher's Summary
When a local man, a veteran of the war in Afghanistan, goes missing, his parents have good reason to be concerned. Emily Willows is a friend of the family and says that she knows just the person to find him - and, as Summer Lane soon points out, the fact that this also fits in with Emily's plan to set up her very own detective agency is surely just a fortuitous coincidence.
But it isn't long before the former detective inspector finds herself on a train heading back to London, and back into situations that she thought she had left behind. Some old acquaintances are renewed, and some difficult memories must be confronted as Lane searches for the missing soldier and discovers the shocking truth about what happened to him five years earlier.

Great and captivating read
The heroic character of Lane meets her match in this well constructed tale. Human
vulnerability is explored between the two heroes as circumstances throw them together in joint opposition to a fow. The experience and harsh reality of PTSD and childhood damage is dealt with in an insightful manner. I loved the drama as well as the characterisations in this well written novel.

Not really plausible
I have enjoyed all the other books written by the author. But a few too many holes in plot in this one.
I am sure other residences in a block of units with private balconies would have dialled 999 with the goings on. Also plenty of other opportunity to decamp.
Narrator is talking a little slower in this series.

Deeply moving
I found this story to be deeply moving as Grainger explored the life experiences of the characters in this multi-faceted adventure.

Well rounded main characters.
Swearing kept to a minimum . No silly little romantic entanglements. Just a good well written thriller.

Very enjoyable.
It would be nice if the narrator used some variations in her intonation. But still enjoyable.

Just. Don’t.
I loathed the first one , but my respect for Grainger’s other work encouraged me to give the series another go. The characters are still unlikeable ( Emily particularly) and the story was moderately better, but not really interesting with no twists. The performance was very disappointing. The accents were the worst of amateur dramatic cringe, I had to turn off at one stage.
