Publisher's Summary

It is Midsummer's Eve. Three young friends meet in a wood to act out an elaborate masque. But, unknown to them, they are being watched. Each is killed by a single bullet. Soon afterwards, one of Inspector Wallander's colleagues is found murdered. Is this the same killer, and what could the connection be? In this investigation, Wallander is always, tantalisingly, one step behind.

Mankell's Wallander is one of the great characters

If you are cynical of the slick CSI-type of murder TV shows and books you may like the Mankell Wallender series. Nothing slick, high tech about these stories, not full of good looking young detectives, nor are there any gunfights. Just gritty, realist problem solving by a flawed individual and his team. Wallander is a great character, in many ways like Le Carre's Smiley. I have enjoyed the entire series but 'One Step Behind' is my favorite. At first listen Barrett seems a little awkward as a reader but now I can't imagine anyone else giving Wallender sound. Very good drama.

Par for the course

As expected for this series. A little too contrived at the ending, with conveniently no phone or gun when the crises hits, but this doesn't hurt the story any. Wallander is a cop full of angst, you are compelled to read on, hoping his star will rise again while he's giving his very soul away to save the day for everyone else. Moody and intriguing, I give the story four stars. The narrator is one of my favourites and does a sublime job as always.

Excellent

All of the Henning Mankell books in the Wallander series are pretty good, but this one is excellent. Gripping to the end. Another good performance by Sean Barrett.
