Publisher's Summary

ELSPETH NEEDS A MONSTER. THE MONSTER MIGHT BE HER.

An ancient, mercurial spirit is trapped inside Elspeth Spindle's head - she calls him the Nightmare. He protects her. He keeps her secrets. But nothing comes for free, especially magic.

When Elspeth meets a mysterious highwayman on the forest road, she is thrust into a world of shadow and deception. Together, they embark on a dangerous quest to cure the town of Blunder from the dark magic infecting it. As the stakes heighten and their undeniable attraction intensifies, Elspeth is forced to face her darkest secret yet: the Nightmare is slowly, darkly, taking over her mind. And she might not be able to stop him.

For fans of Uprooted and For the Wolf comes a gothic fantasy romance about a maiden who must unleash the monster within to save her kingdom.

A nightmare calls

A good book to get me out of a book hangover. It built slowly and before I knew it had be wrapped in its grasps! In particular I enjoy the writing of the nightmare, his poems and hints. a very well constructed storyline.

magical and sinister

I loved it. I was really pleasantly surprised by the narrators voice after reading some reviews about it. I really liked her pace and tone and felt it added to the dark sinister feel of the book. She gave the book a good rhyme.
the book itself was brilliant and lived up to all the good things I've read about it. I really enjoyed it and the magical structure

The Nightmare's Secrets .

Liked the Nightmare's duplicity and the way he sauntered through Elspeth Spindle's mind , laughing at her timidity . Also , thought Elspeth should have been a stronger person than she portrayed mentally , however , knowing that women weren't renowned for their forthrightness back in her day , I am not overly surprised by her continual cries for help from the Nightmare . Unfortunately the more times that she asked for help , the more she had to repay the Nightmare's magic that he used , tragically at the end . So much so that Elspeth Spindle seemed to disappear and another Nightmare had begun .
One point of interest is how quickly her relationship with Raven leaped forward from an intimate kiss to a deeply full-on sexual encounter . This was surprising because I had previously thought that all maidens of Olde were supposedly coy . Well , I guess that is not the case with Elspeth and Raven as , when the sparks started to fly between them , the intensity of situation was shown by the suddeness in which they physically desired each other .

Unexpected. Different. Enjoyable

I nearly returned this book after an hr of listening because the world, the cards, it was all so different that I found it hard to get into. But the reviews of the book were awesome so I persisted. I’m so glad I did. This original piece of fiction was a breath of fresh air. Unpredictable, unexpected and a good story. Well worth persisting to understand the world. A great read for anyone looking for something different.

Unique, intriguing story but for the love of god it's haarth not herrth!

The story is compelling, with a unique magic system and just enough world building. The narration, however, made me want to scream. She constantly mispronunced words and made bizarre acting choices like adding odd childlike inflection and tone to adult characters. Great story, god awful narration.
