About this listen

Paul manages an old-school plastics factory that has pivoted during the pandemic to making face masks and is now booming. Along comes Emily, the wayward daughter of an old friend, whom Paul hires to be his assistant, and she’s a sparkling force determined to prove her worth with the one chance she’s been given.

Imogen, a beautiful former acquaintance of Paul’s, also coincidently appears outside the factory, down on her luck and clearly full of ulterior motive. The masked truths of the women around him soon threaten to turn Paul’s quiet family life upside down.

Gentle & Uncomplicated

A nice story about a nice man. I enjoyed listening and even felt a little sad for all the flawed characters. But then, aren’t we all flawed?

Pivoting in a pandemic and a touch of Thunderbirds

An easy read capturing everyday life in a pandemic. Paul is Mr Nice Guy; a successful entrepreneur who pivots his business in response to covid while trying to be true to his values, being humble, caring, empathetic and loyal to his employees and family. The story acknowledges the vulnerabilities of people in a pandemic, their fears, anxieties and hopes and dips into issues such as domestic violence, mental health and scammers.

Listening to this on Audible, I couldn't help but hear Thunderbirds Jeff Tracy in Paul (sorry narrator Luke Arnold). But I guess Jeff and Paul are kindred spirits, successful family guys who want to do right by everyone. F.A.B.

Something different 🙂

I found this story just easy going, no huge dramas and, unlike some reviewers, interesting. Makes a difference from the usual stories, and I love that about the author's book, they're unique 😊

Average listening

This story started to develop interesting storyline with the different characters, but then seemed to wrap up quickly! The last few chapters felt rushed and a little disappointing.

Corporate drama meets dystopian romance

I’ve got to admit - this one had me on the edge of my (car)seat as I drove to work and took a vacation with my young kids.

One Chance had me thoroughly immersed in the small town corporate pandemic world of the virtuous main character, factory owner Paul, and I deeply enjoyed all of the sub-plots that weaved in and out of his story.

A bit about the characters: The Russian wife was a (surprisingly) deep, non-stereotypical and well thought-out character, Personal Assistant Emily reminded me of a few millennials I know, and I quietly grew to love the gentle spirit of the main character Paul’s 5-year-old son Cody.

The author writes well in the voice of a male main character, equally as well as she writes the female voice, and vocal actor Luke Arnold who was a strong choice for the role of narrator.

Caroline Overington is such an artist in this space and my heart leapt to and fro as I felt each of her brushstrokes hitting the page whilst listening to and consuming this thoughtful and insightful piece.

It’s a “must read” for young and old.

Story struggled a little to draw me in

Like other people who commented it seemed the story took a while to get going then was suddenly done

Okay…

It wasn’t a bad book but I definitely wasn’t on the edge of my seat. It was all over rather sudden as there was no real build up with it just kind of ending. You were given a conclusion/resolution what felt like minutes after the conflict had arose. Just seemed like a mundane story of day-to-day life for the most of it. I don’t regret having listened to it though.

Easy listen, but very abrupt ending

This was an easy listen, it was a free book and it flowed nicely along an intriguing story line, with a very relevant covid-19 theme.

However, just as the story gets interesting, suddenly it was over, like being dumped by a huge wave. I was left a bit bewildered by the author's decision to rush towards an ending that was somewhat unexpected and while it tied up the loose ends, just felt rushed and unsatisfying.
