About this listen

Inti Flynn arrives in Scotland with her twin sister, Aggie, to lead a team of biologists tasked with reintroducing fourteen grey wolves into the remote Highlands. She hopes to heal not only the dying landscape, but Aggie, too, unmade by the terrible secrets that drove the sisters out of Alaska.

Inti is not the woman she once was, either, changed by the harm she's witnessed - inflicted by humans on both the wild and each other. Yet as the wolves surprise everyone by thriving, Inti begins to let her guard down, even opening herself up to the possibility of love. But when a farmer is mauled to death, Inti knows where the town will lay blame. Unable to accept her wolves could be responsible, she makes a reckless decision to protect them. But if the wolves didn't make the kill, then is something more sinister at play?

Once There Were Wolves is the unforgettable story of a woman desperate to save the creatures she loves - if she isn't consumed by a wild that was once her refuge.©2021 Charlotte McConaghy (P)2021 Penguin Random House Australia

Evocative

Beautiful, lyrical writing of a deeply touching story. Wonderfully narrated. An unexpected little treasure for which I am grateful.

Enjoyable

Very enjoyable audiobook. Well read and easy enough to keep track of the characters — although I kept getting my Duncans mixed up with my Dougals and Douglases. Nice to be in the Scottish highlands.

wild

I loved the flow of script, the painting of the scenery without to many abstract adjectives. it was so visceral and intimate.

Breathtaking

Ordinarily I wouldn't have picked a story like this but it was a bookclub choice and I am so glad it was.

The story was atmospheric, haunting, palpable, sad but heart-warming all in one. I can't think of many books that have brought a tear to my eye, but this one did - twice!

Beautiful !!

This is a fantastic beautifully written story with so many great themes woven through it. The wolves, the wilds of Scotland, murder, family love and courage. Brought tears to my eyes and a yearning to be in nature. Great narration.
Very satisfying.

Harrowing but stunning...

Fantastic narration...as an animal lover, this story was a powerful insight into the lives of wolves. Touching but harrowing take on sisterhood and what it means to love unconditionally. Definately worth the read...it will stay with me....

Beautifully written and narrated

McConachy's writing is moving and evocative. For this reason I could overlook the implausibility surrounding the crime/mystery element.

Interesting and important

The theme of the book is interesting because it grapples with the looming problems of overpopulation, climate change and the environmental impacts that it is causing for many of our top tier predators and in this case it is the wolves. The clash is also between the rights of the locals to protect their properties and farm the way they have done for generations or compromise and learn to live and respect the rights of the wolves as they move back into their rightful place in nature.

This book is immensely helpful in understanding the process and problems of returning the wolves back in order to rewild and help restore them and the forests.

This book is an indictment of how far we have removed ourselves from the landscape around us and the impact that this has had on everyone and everything. Ultimately the earth is at a tipping point and can we as humans help solve some of the challenges ahead.

This book is not for the faint hearted as it is brutal in some respects and it will certainly provoke much needed conversations. I think it is a great book for those who are just beginning to understand the importance of conservation.
