About this listen
Nearing the end of a suspended jail sentence should unlock a brighter future for CJ Davis, only the chip on his shoulder is as hard to shift as his bad reputation. Born into a family of career criminals who live down Davis Road, an address the cops have dubbed Davis Row, his name alone is like a rap sheet that makes optimism impossible.
Brand-new parole officer Noah Huxley is determined to see the good in men like CJ. After all, he knows firsthand that bad things can happen to good people. His colleagues mock his doe-eyed optimism, but Noah soon sees CJ's bad attitude and bravado are weapons he uses to keep people at a distance.
Both men know one simple mistake can change a life forever. At first glance, they might seem to be polar opposites. Yet underneath, they're not that different at all.
Contains mature themes.

Heart warming!
What a lovely story, and so well narrated.
My favourite line is right at the end
“Or adopt me.”
It’s funny and sweet and you’ll have to listen to the very end to hear it! Worth it, trust me!

Good things happen to good people who’ve been dealt a shitty start
Super sweet boy meets boy examining the impacts of early neglect, abandonment, poverty, and the invisible barriers to participation in the workforce and effects on social mobility.
Well written and narrated. Read it for the happy ending and stay for the layers.

Heart warming and uplifting.
Another brilliant pairing of Walker and Leslie delivers a beautiful story. Domestic abuse is sensitively explored in this sometimes harrowing story of a young man escaping an abusive father and half brothers. The relationship he has with his grandfather and parole officer are beautifully created by Walker. Do yourself a favour and read/listen to this glorious book, it will make you cry and laugh out loud.

Good story.
Although I like NR Walker’s books I tend to stay away from the audio because it’s frustrating. The narrator just doesn’t suit Aussie stories. So many wrong pronunciations, it’s just annoying to listen to. That all aside, I persevered with this as the story was really good and it was on Audible Plus. I’m glad I did.

Loved it!
Beautiful story! Loved the difference in their lives and how the trust grew between them. It’s a slow burn but worth every second.

slow burn brilliance
wow! What a journey this book is. Through a maze of domestic violence and illiteracy and family tragedy CJ and Noah come to know and trust each other. it's a slow burn and will trigger some but it feels authentic and I couldn't stop listening I mean really sleep is over rated. definitely recommend

Heartbreaking and beautiful
Another amazing piece of work by NR Walker, with excellent narration by Joel Leslie. Noah starts a new career as a corrections officer, spurred on by a family tragedy. He meets one of his parolees, CJ, a jaded, broken young man, just trying to get by, caring for his pop and working part time as an unqualified mechanic. CJ’s past comes back to haunt him when his abusive father is released from prison. The story follows the developing relationship between Noah and CJ.
5/5 as always for anything NR Walker touches. Always a joy to read stories in this genre set in Australia.

Awful narrator choice
Why authors allow Joel Leslie to read their work, I will never understand. He butchered this book. He butchers every single book but people somehow do enjoy his narration? I’m bamboozled.
