Dopo aver patito la fame in un tetro ospizio per i poveri, Oliver viene affidato a un becchino, dal quale scappa a gambe levate per ritrovarsi nelle umide e inospitali strade londinesi, tra ladri e prostitute. Per il piccolo orfano la vita nei bassifondi è davvero dura.

Dickens la rappresenta spogliandola di ogni fascino e romanticismo, ma il principio del Bene, sopravvissuto a ogni circostanza avversa, alla fine trionferà comunque. Uno dei primi racconti sociali che denuncia, con formidabile umorismo nero, i mali della società inglese ottocentesca.
