About this listen

Ocean's Echo is a stand-alone romantic space adventure, set in the same universe as Everina Maxwell's hit debut, Winter's Orbit.

When Tennal—a rich socialite, inveterate flirt and walking disaster—is caught using his telepathic powers for illegal activities, the military decides to bind his mind to someone whose coercive powers are strong enough to control him.

Enter Lieutenant Surit, the child of a disgraced general. Out of a desperate need to restore a pension to his other parent, Lieutenant Surit agrees to be bound to Tennal and keep him conscripted in the army, a task that seems impossible even for someone with Surit's ability to control minds.

Tennal just wants to escape, but Surit isn't all that he seems. And their bond may just be the key to their freedom.

Great characters

I loved Winter’s Orbit and I’d rate this pretty similarly. The highlight was the characters, helped by the fantastic narration. The relationship between the two main characters was great too. I think the story got a little repetitive and there were a few scenes where I was a bit confused. But overall I really loved Sujrit and Tennal and their story.

GOOD STUFF

Hell yeah this was the bees knees, absolutely wonderful, I highly recommend! The chemistry between the characters, the world building and the plot were simply delicious.

Didn’t like this as much as I wanted to

I really expected to like Ocean’s Echo because I loved Winter’s Orbit. I was with the story until about half way through, at which point it started to feel repetitive. By three quarters of the way through I was slogging through just to get to the end. Such a pity! Raphael Corkhill gave a great performance.

Brilliant narration, great world building... but..

Hmmm, I'm left a little flat by this one, and I'm not sure why. The narration was top notch, the world building was great, the chemistry between the main characters was there...
I think there was TOO MUCH world building maybe? Too much escalation and focus on the galactic drama? There was so little focus on the relationship building that it almost felt like it shouldn't be there?
Not sure if I'm saying this well or not. I wanted to get to know the characters, even the background characters, but there was SO much focus on the macro that the tantalising glimpses of the micro left me wanting more and there was no more. Even the ending was kind of "happy at some point in the future, maybe" rather than either of the MC's ending up even a little bit happy for now.
That being said, this felt like a first part of a larger story with this group of characters, so lets hope there's more coming. For now, I'm going to go back and read the first book. I adore it and need some hope for the ppl in this universe.
