Publisher's Summary
I was broken, numb to want and desire, but then he came along...
Three years after the tragic events of Anna's sixteenth birthday which saw her boyfriend killed and her kidnapped by his sadistic murderer, she's no longer the happy-go-lucky girl that everyone used to know and love; she's now cold, hard and suffers from night terrors.
Carter is currently serving time for the murder of Jack—a conviction that Anna helped secure—but his retrial is coming up because some key evidence appears to have been tampered with.
Needing to ensure his daughter's safety, presidential candidate, Senator Spencer, tasks in Ashton Taylor, a newly qualified SWAT agent, to guard the broken girl and keep her safe until the end of the trial.
For three years Anna has refused to feel emotion or pain. Can Ashton help her rebuild her life and finally deal with the grief of losing her childhood sweetheart? Will he be the one to make her see that life is, in fact, worth living and that not all men will hurt her?

Better to read it than hear it 😔
I have always loved this story, so was excited to hear it as well. Narration ruined it for me. The female narrator was ok, though it all felt too one note. When someone is pleading for their life or is angry it really shouldn’t sound like a normal conversation. My main problem with this audiobook however was with the male narrator - and more importantly the person who did the casting.. To give some context, the MMC is 21 years old. The male narrator sounds like a 40 year old who smokes a pack of cigarettes a day. I don’t know what they were thinking matching this voice to this book. I’m sure the male narrator would do fine in another story - just not this one. My other big issue with this narrator is that he needs to learn breath control. So many times he would say a line but ran out of breath before the end so it was even more croaky than it already was. It was just off putting to listen to. When I want to revisit this story in the future I will go back to my paperback for a read, I doubt very much I will listen to the audio again.
