About this listen

When Catherine Morland, a country clergyman's daughter, is invited to spend a season in Bath with the fashionable high society, little does she imagine the delights and perils that await her. Captivated and disconcerted by what she finds, and introduced to the joys of "Gothic novels" by her new friend, Isabella, Catherine longs for mystery and romance. When she is invited to stay with the beguiling Henry Tilney and his family at Northanger Abbey, she expects mystery and intrigue at every turn. However, the truth turns out to be even stranger than fiction.

Wonderful read

Laugh out loud funny and yet quite different to Austen’s other works. The young protagonist and gothic parts were interesting but not my favourite. I did like how it felt like we had an in-joke with the narrator though - very satirical and funny. I would’ve liked more romance but the end still got me in the feels. And great reading by Juliet Stevenson as always!

Wonderfully narrated, Juliet Stevenson brings this clever, romantic and amusing novel to life.

I love Jane Austen however there are so many different audio versions of her novels on Audible that it can be quite tricky to decide which to buy. A poor narrator can just destroy a Jane Austen novel, as so many of the narrators seem to miss the arch humour and just read the books seriously. Having now listened to Juliet Stevenson narrate both Persuasion and Northanger Abbey, I really recommend you try out the audiobooks she reads as she does a wonderful job of bringing the characters to life without being over-the-top - and definitely without missing the humour.

A lesser novel by Jane Austen, very well read

I had never read Northanger Abbey, and would put it at the lower end of Jane Austen's achievements. For one thing, I found many of the conversations far too prolix and unbelievable, especially in the mouths of teenage characters. Still, her powers of observation are well in evidence, along with her fine judgments on moral questions. This reading by Juliet Stevenson is magnificent I must say. She was always a pleasure to listen to.

would recommend

I loved the story. The performance was good when playing the part of dislikeable characters, but the actor also made the characters who were meant to be likeable seems very frivolous and/or narcissistic. she need not have put on such a voice for Henry and Catherine. Overall I would recommend

Refreshing and delightful

Such an easy, romantic, exciting and enjoyable read.
I have scarcely hated a character more than how Austen wrote Isabella Thorpe or her brother! I have scarcely loved a hero and heroine more than Henry Tilney and Catherine Moreland. She reminds so much of what we all were like at 17, how naive and easily lead astray by our own politeness and accommodating nature. Easily a target of narcissistic and manipulative characters ❤️

Enjoyable novel

I am sorry to say that this was my last of Jane Austen's series of novels. It was beautifully read by Juliet Stevenson who has a wonderful ability to bring these stories alive. I am a great fan of Austen and I loved this particular novel too.
