When her father leaves the Church, Margaret Hale is uprooted from her comfortable home in Hampshire to move with her family to the North of England. Initially repulsed by the ugliness of her new surroundings in the industrial town of Milton, Margaret becomes aware of the poverty and suffering of local mill workers and develops a passionate sense of social justice.
In North and South Gaskell skillfully fused individual feeling with social concern and in Margaret Hale created one of the mostoriginal heroines of Victorian literature.

Such an engaging and moving novel / the introduction give a clear and interesting way into the novel and what Gaskell is doing with it / politics of capital and the heart

A great love story for the ages
Loved it, not just a great love story but a fascinating exploration of industrial revolution, Victorian England.

Brilliant book and performance
I don’t think I’ve ever enjoyed an audiobook more. The book is, in itself, an absolute classic with a brilliant turn of phrase and intricate development of characters. The performance was also excellent. Very much recommend.

had to read for school
this made it so much easier! the narration greatly assisted my comprehension and focus. the story is awful, but the performance was lovely :)
