About this listen

None of This Rocks is a memoir by Joe Trohman—lead guitarist and cofounder of Fall Out Boy—that unfolds like a double album full of revealing stories from his youth and his experiences of modern rock and roll stardom. With wit and wisdom, and maybe a little bit of whining, Trohman grapples with depression, his mother's brain cancer, antisemitism, pills, petty larceny, side hustles, and pop punk at the turn of the century.

None of This Rocks chronicles a turbulent life that has informed Trohman's music and his worldview. His mother suffered from mental illness and multiple brain tumors that eventually killed her. His father struggled with that tragedy, but was ultimately a supportive force in Trohman's life who fostered his thirst for knowledge. Trohman faced antisemitism in small-town Ohio, and he witnessed all levels of misogyny, racism, and violence amid the straight edge hardcore punk scene in Chicago. Then came Fall Out Boy. From the guitarist's very first glimpses of their popular ascension, to working with his heroes like Anthrax's Scott Ian, to writing for television with comedian Brian Posehn, Trohman takes listeners backstage, into the studio, and onto his couch. He shares his struggles with depression and substance abuse in a brutally honest and personal tone that listeners will appreciate. Not much of this rocks, perhaps, but it all adds up to a fascinating music memoir unlike any you've ever listened to.

Real, raw, funny and moving reflection on music and fame

Joe Trohman’s self deprecating humour, honesty and self awareness make for a sometimes laugh out loud, sometimes tear-jerking listen. This book is not just for Fall Out Boy fans, although there is an excellent retelling of what the scene was like when FOB started, and insights into their career since. But much more than that, this book is for anyone who has experienced childhood trauma and is dealing with it the best they can. I’m so glad Joe wrote this book and read the audio version. It was a joy and privilege to learn more about his story.

Raw, powerful, beautifully written and amusing

Read it, listen to it, ingest this book however you choose, just do yourself a favour and do it.
This is one of the rare books that had me feeling a full gambit of emotion. I even wretched once! (Thanks for those vivid descriptions, Joe Trohman).
While I identified with this story on many levels (our mothers even died of the same cancer), there is something in it for everyone.

As a lifelong Fall Out Boy fan (since I first heard Dead On Arrival way back in 2001), I should probably have known more about the author/narrator but I confess, I know almost zero personal details about them. I went in almost clueless but that blurb captured my interest immediately.

The man tells a compelling tale and weaves the threads of his life together so well, I was left in awe and never wanting it to end.

A must for any Fall Out Boy fan!

Joe narrating this makes it absolutely perfect. I just loved listening to him read his own story! I was going to (and will still) read the hard copy. However, there was a delay with mine & I just couldn't wait. I'm glad it turned out that way, because I feel like this is just such a cool experience that I am truly grateful for. Joe's humour is even more... humurous in audio. It heightened my "reading" experience.

This was my first audio book, I usually prefer "the real thing," and I have to say that I feel it will be a hard act to follow. I am a massive Fall Out Boy fan. Hearing such intimate details of one of its members' lives was incredible. Also, having an insight into why Joe is Joe is so cool. I was there on those tours where he was high, knowing he was high, wondering why he was high. Now I have answers.

Loooooved this book. Bwing called out as a "die-hard fan" (someone who would recognize Joe in public) was definitely a highlight for me! 😆🥰
